Scenic Sounds: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

HARRY-POTTER-AND-THE-DEATHLY-HALLOWS-soundtrack-450x450

The highly anticipated first installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has arrived and, along with it, a powerful musical score. Alexandre Desplat picks up where Nicholas Hooper left off in Half Blood Prince and takes the musical reigns in this heated series. At first, the score for Deathly Hallows could possibly be perceived as unfinished; the magic that Harry Potter scores usually evoke might not initially consume you the way it always has, for it does not possess the comprehensive range of emotions each Potter film has. However, because the story is unfinished and jaw dropping events have yet to unfold, it makes sense that the score is somewhat underdeveloped as well–a score’s duty is to complement and enhance a film’s existing features.

Sick of Love, the debut album from French band J.C. Satàn, is just the one-hundredth release from Slovenly Recordings out of Nevada. This crew of three dudes from Bordeaux, France and two girls from Turin, Italy deserves a prize for recording the one-millionth uninspired garage-rock album. Read More »

Review: Eux Autres, Broken Bow

Before I listened to Eux Autres’ album, Broken Bow, not only did I know nothing about the band or their style of music, I also had no clue as to how to even pronounce their name, let alone what it meant. Upon investigating the band’s website, I found out that the French phrase, “Eux Autres” is pronounced “ooz-oh-tra” and that it translates to, “Them Others.” Although I don’t have a (major) problem with the French, it seems odd that an American band from San Francisco would use a French name to describe itself, but pas important! I put that confusion aside and listened to the album. Read More »

Playlist: Party Your Face Off

party

This is it. One of your last chances of the semester to finish those Four Lokos you’ve been stocking up on ever since you heard they are going to stop distributing them. This is not a finals playlist. Leave the mellow, boring acoustic music for next week. Let’s take a breath, enjoy the present, and rejoice in the fact that it is still the weekend before you stay in to study. Enjoy yourself while the most exciting thing in your life is not the walk to Lauinger Library. Encompassing the old and the new, this playlist will get you in the right mindset. You shall not read or type when you listen to this playlist. You shall play it loud, VERY LOUD.  Crank up that volume, get rowdy, get naked, get ignorant, get belligerent.

Smoke beer, get fucked.

Deluka - You Are The Night1 1 - Version 2 and others

Deluka, a relatively unknown British rock band composed of Ellie Innocenti, Kris Kovacs, Robbie G, and Stevie J. Palmer recently began with their ascent to stardom (or at least recognition) with their self-titled EP, You Are the Night. In fact, “Cascade,” the hit song from the EP that is also included in the album, won MTVU’s “The Freshman” award in April. Read More »

Concert Review: The Morning Benders at the Black Cat

After two years of following The Morning Benders’ music since their 2008 tour with The Kooks, I would finally get to see the California foursome again. This time the encounter would not be in New York City, but instead Washington, DC. While the band may have opened for British Pop/Rock band the Kooks then, they headlined at the Black Cat on a Friday night after two opening bands, Oberhofer and Twin Sister. Did I mention it was a sold out show?

The Rotation Recycles: dios, dios

Last week, while browsing through shelves packed to the gills with old CDs in WTGB’s studio anteroom—a chamber amicably dubbed the “womb room”—I came across a stray radio relic: a WGTB Record Review Slip. Before WGTB went big time with our infiltration of the Internet, we had a quaint system of writing a few comments and an overall grade for each album on a post-it which would then be slipped into the CD case and tucked away on a shelf, rarely—if ever—to be dusted off and spun once more. Every once in a while, however, when I am late for class or have a huge paper due and need to find a great way to procrastinate, I like to go into the womb room and peruse the vast collection that is our Rotation.

Video: Fluorescent Sense

Posted by on December 1st 2010 8

As we gear up for winter, fighting off hordes of empty calories, ironically infinite finals, and ravenous commercialism, and above all dumping tinsel and bulbs on anything that now seems just too dreary, Fluorescent Sense helped spruce up the back stairwell of Healy Hall in a lively performance for your listening pleasure.
