Track It Down: The Heavenly States, The Donkeys, About Group

For a second it seems Heavenly States’ “Berlin Wall” is only as good as it seems because of the borrowed pipes of none other than Britt Daniel. But the triumphant close washes away that sentiment just as forcefully as it does the simple fingerpicked intro, with drums explosive enough to tear down that wall itself. The rest of Oui Camera Ou falls short of this EP’s highlight, although the comic closer “Careful With That Review, Eugene” gives it all a new perspective. Enlisting Eugene Mirman of Flight of the Concords fame, some of the bands most negative reviews garnered from their first full length are delivered with attempted sincerity to mock the contrived self-importance blotting the blogosphere. So I suppose at the risk of being featured in their next epilogue I’ll just say “you guys rule” and step off the internet pulpit.

Review: Obits, Moody, Standard & Poor

Posted by on April 28th 2011 0

obits

Subpop has clearly gotten back in touch with their 90′s grungey vibe, having produced the likes of Nirvana and Mudhoney. Obits’ very retro Moody, Standard & Poor brings us back to the days of punk and garage rock, reminding us of what made us fall in love with this crazy genre in the first place. This album reawakens the hardcore teen angst and has a very Gen X feel to it. With Obits’ heavy baseline and dueling guitar riffs, these fellas truly rock out.

The Faceoff Manifesto

Comrades,

Today we are challenged by a formidable adversary: the unstoppable onslaught of information. From Ethics to Accounting, forcible redistribution of brain cells has left us forgetting our roots, forgetting what we once held so dear. Too many times we let the shallow, angsty, one-time hits of our adolescence get lost amongst the impertinent sophistication of “adulthood!”

Today, we return to our roots. We reclaim what was once ours. We take back those simple, addictive tunes that inspired our younger selves! Read More »

Hoppy Easter from WGTB

Posted by on April 24th 2011 2

The only thing rising faster than Jesus these days is that beautiful spring temperature, and with that every man, woman, child, and bunny can shake off cooped up agitation and let out the love. At times bordering on irreverent, desiring but not desperate for attention, and on the eternal quest for dance partners, snacks, and a place to shake his fluffy tail, Mike McClain took campus by storm to share WGTB’s love for spring at Georgetown. It doesn’t get much better. Where Georgetown Trains Bunnies? White Guy Tryna Bustamove? Whatever it is, we got the beat. Check out the Easter playlist after the jump paw-picked by the rabbit. Enjoy! Footnotes, Why Not Play Some Deep Cuts?

Posted by on April 21st 2011 0

Radio

This is a companion piece to the Wed. April 20th episode of Footnotes that streams on WGTB from 9-10pm.

For the most part criticism of radio tends to concentrate on the top 40 format stations (which they completely deserve). Today, however, I’m going to air a different radio related grievance – one with classic rock radio. Why not play a Warren Zevon song that isn’t “Werewolves of London?” Why not play a Troggs song aside from “Wild Thing?” Or a Who song aside from “My Generation,” “Baba O’Riley,” or “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” or the other couple of songs that they always play? When you consider that much of their listeners have been listening for years, it seems likely that they would appreciate a more varied playlist. Additionally, it seems like a sound business move to stave off some of satellite radio’s competition.  Admittedly, my show may tend to rely too much on band’s best-known songs, so to mitigate this, this week will be all about deeper cuts by band’s which tend to only get airplay for a few songs.
