Grimes, alias of Canadian musician Claire Boucher, is not an artist for the faint of heart. Her sound is far from accessible for the masses, but for those who appreciate her eclectic style, her fourth album Visions may be just the album they’re looking for. Released by 4AD, Visions offers listeners a trippy and ethereal saga of electro-pop music.
From an immediate week or so of listening to “You’re A Lie,” I can say that it sounds like Apocalyptic Love, the upcoming album by Slash, featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, will not be the same thing as the incredible, eclectic mix of songs that made up his first solo album, titled Slash. That being said, that is not a bad thing, as Slash now has created a solid chemistry with Kennedy and The Conspirators, so my hopes are high. The song that Slash has created with this band, if lead singles are any good indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, we have a modern classic hard rock album on our hands.
Paste hates it, Pitchfork loves it; Sleigh Bells’ second album, Reign of Terror, has generated a viral debate almost as virulent as the argument over the availability of contraception on Georgetown’s Jesuit campus. So St. Patrick’s Day is my favorite holiday. It doesn’t include extended family, presents, or being in love. St. Patrick’s Day is just a holiday where you can hang out with your friends and enjoy simple things, like little green men and Irish music. With that, everyone need’s a good St. Patty’s Playlist and what better place to get it than from WGTB. So please enjoy and remember that everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Listen after the jump! I’ll admit, I was a tad nervous when Van Halen announced that they were putting out a new album. While the immediate thought was “Rock gods be praised,” the little nagging doubt in the back of my head snapped me back to reality. It has been 13 years since Van Halen last recorded an album (1998’s Van Halen III with Gary Cherone, not their finest hour) and 27 years since the band last recorded an album with original front man “Diamond” David Lee Roth at the helm. All I could do was close my eyes, cross my fingers, and pray; and the rock gods answered my prayers.
A great deal has changed for Chairlift since the release of the first full-length in 2008 – founding member Aaron Pfenning left to go solo with his electronic project, Rewards; the duo he ditched – singer Caroline Polachek and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Wimberley – signed to major label, Columbia Records; and (how can we forget?), the group’s track “Bruises” found its way into homes nationwide on the saccharine back of a series of iPod Nano commercials. Now that the dust of this tumult has settled and been put to proof on record in their sophomore effort Something, the question stands: how does Chairlift sound now?
