Album Review: Bruce Springsteen,Wrecking Ball

Wreckingball

★★★★★

There have been very few times in my life where I have been happy to be wrong; Bruce Springsteen’s new album, Wrecking Ball might stand out as the greatest instance. After finding lead single “We Take Care Of Our Own,” to be somewhat mediocre, and fearing the same thing for all of the album, having my expectations blown away is a wonderful feeling. With Wrecking Ball, Springsteen makes one of his most personal and expressive albums of his career, one that outshines 2009’s Working On A Dream by miles. If I had to described the album in to people more familiar with Springsteen’s work, I would say that it is a mix of We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (2006) and Magic (2007). Read More »

BigBang_-_Alive_(Korean_Cover)

On February 29th, the mega-popular South Korean boy group BIGBANG released their fifth mini-album, titled “ALIVE”, for everyone to enjoy. If you are a follower of K-Pop (Korean Pop) then you probably have heard a song at least from this five-membered group that took all the top spots in Korean music charts when “ALIVE” was released. Despite the difference in language, BIGBANG has managed to have fans from all over the world and if anyone is a fan of dance, hip-hop, R&B and pop, I can assure you that you will find one BIGBANG song to enjoy. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the amount of music I want to listen to. I have so little time to listen to it all that I enjoy being able to sit down and actually listen to an album to review. Unfortunately, Illusion, the debut album from Poor Moon, was not quite worth this devoted listening. Read More »

Album Review: SHINee, Sherlock EP

Shineesherlockkorea

One of the most highly anticipated comebacks for K-Pop listeners was dropped Wednesday, March 21st. Although it is just an EP, it is SHINee’s comeback no less. But why so highly anticipated? It’s because the five-membered group from SM had not released a new song since their highly successful single, “Hello,” which was released in 2010. The long wait is also partly responsible for my disappointment in my first listen. Read More »

Album Review: Odd Future, The OF Tape 2

Posted by on April 23rd 2012 0

ofvol2

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. I think the Los Angeles-based rap collective’s name really tells you most of what you need to know about the group. Nonsensical, violent, bizarre, psychotic and gang-like. Currently the kings of controversy in the rap industry because of their often graphically violent, misogynistic lyrics, Odd Future is at it again with their newest album The OF Tape Vol 2. Led by the imposing Tyler the Creator along with henchmen rappers Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, Hodgy Beats, Domo Gensis, Left Brain, Taco, Mike G and Syd the Kyd, Odd Future comes out guns blazing, full of hatred, anger and just general angst. Nothing is revolutionary on this tape, in short, it is a challenging, difficult to digest piece of intense rap about everything from growing up, getting high, fatherhood, murder and especially suicide.

Concert Review: Gary Clark Jr.

Posted by on April 20th 2012 0

Over spring break, I was lucky enough to attend a Gary Clark Jr. concert in Houston, TX. For those of you that have not heard of him yet, you definitely will in the future. By far one of the best living guitarists around, Gary Clark Jr. has already been compared to the likes of Jimi Hendrix. Clark grew up in Austin, TX and played at local venues in his early years before meeting Clifford Antone, owner of Antone’s music club. Antone’s served as a launch pad for Clark who began playing with many musicians including Jimmie Vaughn. Last June, Clark even played the Bonnaroo Music Festival and was named Rolling Stone‘s “Best Young Gun,” in the April 2011 issue of “Best of Rock.” Recently, Clark played at the White House in honor of Black History Month and South by Southwest (SXSW). Album Review and Interview: Quiet Company, We Are All Where We Belong

Lyrical Genius: ★★★★★

Overall Music: ★★★★3/4

Without listening closely to the lyrics of each song, one would assume that Quiet Company is just another indie band combining tunes from the Get Up Kids with the lyrics of Colin Meloy of the Decemberists. However, We Are All Where We Belong, is packed with meaty and sometimes controversial lyrics which many people can relate to. In lead singer Taylor Muse’s own word, “It is, essentially, a break up record, only the romance that’s ending was between myself and religion.” Muse’s emotion and honesty in confronting his troubles with religion and ultimate separation from it, contribute strongly to the power and mood of the lyrics and the album as a whole.  For anyone who has struggled with understanding religion or ultimately given up on it, this is one album in which the singer and song-writer can definitely relate.
