Song of the Day: “True Thrush” – Dan Deacon

Posted by on December 1st 2012 0

This one gets song of the day for an amazing music video concept. Dan Deacon is an Electronic musician from Baltimore who has enjoyed relatively wide spread popularity during the last decade, in which he has prolifically produced 13 albums. His most recent, America, was released in August and included this fun track.

The video is based off a drawing/acting version of the game telephone. Deacon and film maker Ben O’Brien start the video by creating a scene. The scene is then shown to the next team, who has an hour to try and recreate it from scratch as best they can. The 19 teams in the video are all members of the Baltimore art scene – including members from art collective Wham City and indie rock group Future Islands. Take a look after the break! Read More »

So remember the heyday of music television in the late 80s and early 90s when you could flip on MTV and regularly see musical legends like Nirvana and Sonic Youth up on screen? (Okay, so you probably don’t. Let’s face it: we were all too busy teething and learning to walk — but you get it.) Well, this is JUST LIKE THAT, except this time around it’s mtvU and us instead of Kurt Cobain.

Song of the Day: “When My Name Is Spoken” – Spirit Family Reunion

When you think of young bluegrass bands, popular groups that mix genres and influences like Trampled By Turtles or crossover hits like Mumford and Sons might come to mind. But Spirit Family Reunion, an unsigned bunch of young musicians from Brooklyn, are gathered around one microphone and clinging to their acoustic guitars, banjos, fiddles, upright basses and washboards to keep that pure, old school sound going strong. In their own words, they make “homegrown American music to stomp, clap, shake and holler with” that sounds as excitingly raw and energetic on record as it would at a barn dance, in a church basement or on the back porch.

Take a listen to “When My Name is Spoken” after the jump and catch the band live at IOTA Cafe (21+) in Arlington this Thursday night opening for Adam Arcuragi.

Playlist: Songs for Sandy

So Sandy’s showing off outside our windows right now, but so what? We are a tough and weathered bunch — especially my fellow 2013ers. From trudging through the hip-high piles during Snowpocalypse to hiding away from Irene and straightening up the books on our shelves after that magnitude-5.8 earthquake, we have prevailed. And now I’m sure that we’ll all survive Sandy. Heck, at this point, even if the Mayans are spot-on with their prediction, I have no doubts that we’ll all just post celebratory Facebook statuses about class being cancelled and get on our daily lives in the hellscape of the post-apocalyptic world.

But just because you’re tough doesn’t mean that you can’t curl up on your couch (away from your windows) and put on some good tunes to help you weather the storm. So here’s a mix of rain and wind. And here’s to you, Sandy. Click through for the mix and the full track listing. Read More »

It’s that time of year. You walk outside and feel the crisp air, see many a changing leaf, and somehow it seems as though the scent of cinnamon is all around. You know it’s fall. Could it be any better?
