If you’ve been keeping an eye on the blog in the past month, you’ve already heard a bit about rising sophomore Peter Fanone. He stopped by the WGTB studio in early May to talk a little bit about his newest single, “Friends For Now.” But he also took a break from studying on a sunny Saturday afternoon during finals to serenade us and the rest of the front lawn with two original songs. Take a listen after the jump, and keep an ear out for more from Peter in the fall.
Back in April, Georgetown Student Peter Fanone (COL ’15) released his new single, “Friends For Now.” Peter has been writing songs since middle school and began recording while attending high school at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, MD. Last semester, he released an EP called Dreams, Fate and Everything In Between, but for his next release he’s looking forward to exploring the folkier sound he developed on “Friends For Now,” inspired by his love of bands like The Avett Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel. Take a listen to his single and check our on-air interview with Peter after the jump!
Last Friday night, Dahlgren Quad was full of couples in tuxes and gowns snapping photos on their way to Dip Ball. And they were lucky that we dragged DC’s own Lightfoot outside to set up shop on top of the fountain for some impromptu serenading. Led by the strong voice of singer-songwriter Jessica Louise Dye, Lightfoot pared down its numbers to a folky, earnest sound with just a couple of guitars and a trumpet–accompanied also at points by the bells from Healy’s clock tower and many, many planes en route to Reagan. Take a listen to four originals as well as a killer cover of Hall and Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” after the jump!
Not all covers are created equal. There are the straight-ahead renditions, and then there are the personal twists and complete genre re-workings. There are the covers that render your favorite songs unlistenable and, maybe most importantly, the kind that take a song you’d never given a second thought to and trigger that ah-ha! moment: “So that‘s what this is all about!” Suffice to say, most of us probably didn’t give JoJo’s 2006 hit “Too Little Too Late” a first thought. If the name U.S. Royalty doesn’t ring a bell yet, listen up. These guys have been earning accolades from the likes of Spin, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Esquire and NPR since the 2011 release of their debut record, Mirrors, and are set to hit the Sweetlife stage for a second year running. But this Saturday, April 14th, at 8:30pm, WGTB is teaming up with Sweetgreen and Relay for Life to bring you an intimate look at these DC-based rockers right in our own Bulldog Alley. Opening up for U.S. Royalty, we’re lucky to welcome some DC royalty with John Davis and Chris Richards of Q and Not U as well as our Battle of the Bands winners, Law Abiding Criminals!
Tickets will be $3 in advance / $5 at the door
To pick up your ticket, you can find us outside of Midnight on Lau 2 from 9-11 Tuesday (4/10) to Thursday (4/12). We’ll also be tabling with tickets in Red Square from 12-3pm Wednesday (4/11) to Friday (4/13).
In honor of the event, some of our exec board members and DJs have brought a cut from U.S. Royalty‘s debut to life in this trailer that imagines U.S. Royalty as a hypothetical live action, American history-themed, celebrity death match-type reality show where the winner earns the right to reign over these United States as monarch. Enjoy and see you Saturday night! Read More »
Put on your headphones; it’s time to listen to Lucky Dragons. Existers, the latest effort from duo Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara, can be heard any which way, but the album benefits immensely from the space and texture that a pair of headphones can afford. On headphones, you can almost feel the notes pinch you, as the album opens with an otherworldly pulsation of clicks, whirs and delicate synths that will have your mind glued to its seat. Forget structure. Forget lyrics. Simply appreciate the subtle, haphazard somethings that populate your ears. Read More »
