As I sit curled up under two blankets on my couch telling my friends for the second and third times that yes, I am already on spring break, I can’t help but think that Georgetown gets it wrong. I understand. Really, I do. Any later into March and spring break would be too close to Easter, but come on — 40 degree highs and knitwear? This isn’t what spring break is about. It’s about enjoying rising temperatures or surf-side destinations, breaking out the cutoffs and bathing suits, soaking up the rays and sipping on tropical-flavored beverages. But if we can’t have that, we can at least have the soundtrack that goes with it: driving beats, jangly riffs, breezy lo-fi melodies. So grab your NSO shades, turn on the heat lamp and dig into these 16 cuts ranging from 1966 to 2012 and from The Beach Boys to Georgetown’s very own Text Message after the jump! Read More »

WGTB is co-sponsoring a SILENT DJ battle so lace up your dancing shoes and come on out to Bulldog Alley this Friday, February 24, from 10PM-1AM. There will be two DJs spinning mixes and, using your headset, you pick which one you want to listen to! You could be grooving to the Bee Gees (is that what the kids listen to these days?) while that cutie across the dance floor is jamming to Bieber. And you’ll never have to know. We’ll be bringing our best socially unaware flailing, so come put us to shame with your moves. Maybe we’ll even have a dance off. It’s a guaranteed good time for low low cost $free.99, so stop by and bring your friends. Let us know you’ll be attending on the facebook event and invite all your friends. Read More »

Do you love music? Do you have Hoya pride? If you answered yes to both of those questions, Grasping At Straws needs your help! The student band, featuring Anatole Doak (COL ’12) and Matt Galizia (COL ’12) as well as Charlie Burgoyne and Chris Harold, is playing in a Battle of the Bands this Sunday 2/19. Depending on how many tickets they sell by Thursday, they’ll either get to play a smaller venue like DC9 or the Rock N Roll Hotel or the ultimate DC stage at the 9:30 Club. Additionally, the winner of each venue will get 15 hours of studio time and $500. Watch this acoustic session we did with Anatole and if you’re interested in helping these guys to the big stage at the 9:30 Club, make sure to check out the details after the jump! Read More »

WGTBoard Show: TONIGHT 10-11pm

Posted by on January 31st 2012 1

boardshow

So here’s something new: Every Tuesday night, our executive board will be hosting a show from 10-11pm. Generally, this will give us a chance to bring in guests, share new music we get in at the station, highlight blog content on-air, dramatically perform Shakespeare soliloquies, etc. But we’d also like to hear from you! We welcome questions, comments and concerns. How are your first few days of DJing going? Did you like Marathon Day? Did you make new friends? We also welcome lively on-air debates. Is dirt inherently dirty? Is Lana Del Rey overrated/overhated? Is Big Boi still in jail?

And we are always more than willing to dole out advice (disclaimer: it may not be good advice, though).

Listen in tonight from 10-11pm and put 202-687-9482 on speed dial!

Does everyone always tell you that you have a face for radio? Well, now’s your chance to find out. Whether you’re into commentating on the race to the White House or crafting a best new music playlist to rival Pitchfork, or anything in between, we want you to show us your chops. All you have to do is come to our General Interest Meeting on Tuesday, January 17th at 9pm (location TBA–keep your eyes out for fliers/posts/tweets/smoke signals) to see what we’re all about, start scheming your on-air comedy routines or lining up those interviews with local artists or queueing up the best damn dubstep polka remixes you can find (if that’s what you’re into, I guess) and fill out our Spring 2012 Application which is up HERE. Applications are due January 19th, so make sure to get yours in on time for your chance to get a spot on the air this semester.
