What happens when a next-big-thing becomes just a big thing? Judging by Smith Westerns’ performance on February 1 at the Black Cat, going from a ‘cool young band’ to a band that can maintain an audience’s interest through a forty minute set involves major growing pains and maybe even some whining. Playlist: Finals Week

Last time I wrote in these pages, I made a playlist to guide you through a finals week that had begun to feel at least a little bit like a zombie apocalypse. So you made if through that bloodbath alive, congratulations.

Lucky for all of us this finals week is a lot more like a transatlantic flight. It’s long and arduous, the air feels different, and you wish you could be moving your legs more often. You’ll probably spend the whole time wishing for it to end, but what can you do except buckle in, put on some music, and hope you’re sitting next to someone you like, or at least, someone who will leave their shoes on? And remember, at the end of this time you spend being held captive in Lau while having anxiety dreams in which you are chased by a gang of blood-thirsty blue books, something beautiful awaits you: your final destination. Which, if statistics prove to be correct, is most likely New Jersey. Read More »

Playlist: Finals Week

Posted by on December 11th 2010 4

Night-of-the-Living-Dead-Zombies

Surviving a week of finals is a lot like surviving a massive zombie attack. You spend most of your time indoors trying to devise an ingenious scheme to make it out alive, or, in this case, to escape being reduced to a heap of tears in some dark corner of the library hoping the automated stacks will malfunction and put you out of your misery. Making it out alive, much like living through a zombie apocalypse, is really just a matter of mental fortitude. All those hours logged at Yates can’t save you from the impending onslaught of tests and papers; in fact, they may end up being your downfall. After all, it’s not your body the monster wants, it’s your brain. With this in mind here’s a playlist to remind you that there is a light at the end of the dark tunnel of bluebooks and page counts, and, much like the colony of human survivors you dream of as the zombie growls get louder and louder, winter break is out there somewhere. Click through to listen.

Eels at the 9:30 Club

Posted by on October 14th 2010 0

You wouldn’t recognize Eels frontman E (Mark Oliver Everett) by his appearance at the 9:30 club on September 26, his face was almost entirely obscured by a blue bandana, big sunglasses, and a very impressive ZZ-top scale beard. Though his face was basically missing from the concert, his distinctively crooning and rusty voice definitely was not. He made the walls of the 9:30 Club vibrate with his old school opening number, Daisies of the Galaxy, and stunned audiences with his innovation while covering Janis Joplin’s Summertime and mixing his well known Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues with the Beatle’s Twist and Shout.

Perpetual Groove at the 9:30 Club

Perpetual Groove, the Athens, GA based band, drew a decent-sized crowd of eclectic but devoted DC fans to the 9:30 club this past Wednesday night. Following the opening act, The Bridge, Perpetual Groove came onstage at 10:30, late for a DC Wednesday night, yet this fact did not hinder their energy and ability to jam. They moved almost seamlessly from one song to the next, with few breaks—creating a single flowing instrumental profusion of sound and melody.
