Song of the Day: “The Four Horsemen” – Metallica

Metallica_-_Kill_'Em_All_cover

What with Hurricane Sandy and Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilms (and subsequent announcement of a new Star Wars Trilogy), I can’t help but shake the feeling that the end might be soon. So to honor that, this song of the day comes from Metallica’s debut album, Kill ‘Em All (originally titled Metal Up Your Ass). With galloping, palm-muted riffs and some of the finest examples of more pure speed metal from Metallica’s early days, “The Four Horsemen,” in a sonic sense at least, conjures the image of the horsemen riding to bring ruin. While Metallica have their own take on the horsemen (Time, Famine, Pestilence, Death compared with the commonly agreed Revelations horsemen Conquest, War, Famine, Death) many fans have taken the song to be about the members of Metallica, and”the four horsemen,” is one of Metallica’s oldest nicknames. Lyrics that conjure ruin, thundering riffs, and furious guitar solos make “The Four Horsemen” not just a great metal track, but a song to end the world to. Listen below!

Album Review: Green Day, ¡Uno!

★★★★

Billie Joe Armstrong’s recent meltdown at the iHeartRadio Music Festival is not a sign that Green Day are close to burning out. ¡Uno!, the trio’s new album released on September 25th, is proof that the band is as strong as ever. ¡Uno! is the first of a trilogy of album that Green Day will release over the next five months, with ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! (in reference to drummer Tré Cool) following, and the theme of the three albums overall being the night of a party.

A great deal has happened to Flying Lotus in the past six years. He’s gone from an obscure underground Los Angeles hip-hop producer to an icon of a subgenre: beat music. Lotus has put out 4 LPs, including his most recent work Until the Quiet Comes, numerous EPs, created his own label, Brainfeeder, and inspired hundreds of kids around the world to follow his path and make “beats” in this span of time.

EP Review: Houndmouth, Houndmouth

houndmouth

Rating: ★★★★★

Every once in a while, a folksy American blues band catches everyone’s attention and takes off. The Head and the Heart did just that in 2011, and the Lumineers last Spring. Now, its Houndmouth’s turn. Houndmouth was born out of the combination of folk duo Katie Toupin and Matt Myers of The Saint James Hotel, Shane Cody of Riffraff Revival, and Zak Appleby. Together they come together to create soulful harmonies, and a folk band with everything it needs to make it big.

Song of the Day: “Murked” – Spirit Spine

Posted by on October 31st 2012 0

spiritspine

Spirit Spine is the indie-rock project from Joseph Denney, a student at Indiana University, who has been floating around the blogosphere for a minute now with his experimentations ranging from shoegaze to new-wave.  Earlier this year he released the heavily slept-upon Atlantic Downs which had Denney progress as a producer with hopelessly catchy and atmospherically-tinged electronic-pop.  ”Murked” acts as a calling card for Spirit Spine’s distinctive sound with Denney’s captivating croon placed against a backdrop of swelling electronics.  During the chorus Denney’s singing calls up a tidal wave of noise with arpeggiating synths and a Phil Spector-worthy wall of sound.  The video above manages to capture the guilty pleasure vibe of “Murked” with some fine ladies doing some gruesome acts.  It’s disturbingly sexy and totally awesome. Check it out after the jump!

Show of the Week: (DC)^3

dc3

(DC)^3, or DC Cubed, is one of our favorite new shows on WGTB. While we love the tunes that DJ DC, sophomore Dan Corry, plays each week, we are equally as smitten with the cleverness of DJ DC’s show name and idea. Listen in to all the awesomeness of (DC)^3 every Thursday at 9 PM EST on www.georgetownradio.com!

Album Review: Freelance Whales, Diluvia

Generally, I would approach an album based on the concept of space exploration with some healthy trepidation. However, Freelance Whales’ debut album, Weathervanes, focused on the equally otherworldly concept of ghosts, and they pulled that one off beautifully. On Diluvia, Freelance Whales look towards the future rather than the past, creating an album that demonstrates musical progress while maintaining their distinct sound.

Concert/Album Review: Lord Huron, Lonesome Dreams

Posted by on October 30th 2012 0

“I like all of your posts on Facebook.”  No, no no, I found myself thinking as these words left my mouth.  I was standing next to Ben Schneider, lead singer of my favorite band Lord Huron, after watching his thoroughly beautiful and lively performance Sunday night, October 7, at The Black Cat, and this was all I could find to say?  What about “Your lyrics are gorgeous and inspiring” or “Where did you come up with the idea for the album artwork and the video trailers and the fake novelist for your first full-length album Lonesome Dreams?” or even “I am eternally grateful to NPR for streaming your new record before its release and have listened to it 1059371 times already”?
