“Boyfriend” – Marika Hackman

Marika Hackman is back on the scene with a brand new single, “Boyfriend.” It is not at all what I expected but is somehow totally suitable to her sound. I’m used to her usual grungy, folky songs from her last album, We Slept At Last, so I found “Boyfriend” a surprising step in a different direction. It is bold, in your face, and funny too. Leaving the darker crooning behind, Marika uses her confident voice and just as confident lyrics to get “payback for all those times [she’d] been interrupted mid-snog by some seedy wanker asking to join in.”

“Boyfriend” is backed by band The Big Moon and includes recorded dolphin sounds and pretty epic lyrics: “Heaven knows we’re meant to be/But it’s turned into a mess/No one takes us seriously just because I wear a dress.” Another notable line: I hope your boyfriend doesn’t mind/You tell me that you love me every time/I held his girl in my hands/She likes it ’cause they’re softer than a man’s.”

I mean seriously, those lyrics! Keep an eye out for new tunes from Marika Hackman – if this single is any indication, great things are in store for this talented young artist.
