“Fairly Local”– twenty one pilots

Last Monday, via social media, twenty one pilots announced the first details of their upcoming album, Blurryface, which is dropping May 19th, their world tour, and their new single, “Fairly Local.” Blurryface is going to be the Ohio electronic rock duo’s third studio album.

“Fairly Local” is the closest the band has come to the traditional rap sound. Although slightly different genre-wise, the song still features the dark and twisted lyrics that twenty one pilots is known for. The production of this song also seems to suggest that the band is going in a slightly different direction with Blurryface then they have with their past albums.

This song is about twenty one pilots struggle to remain the local Ohio band they started out as, hence the lyric “I’m fairly local, I’ve been around/I’ve seen the streets you’re walking down.” The lyrics showcase the struggle between staying a local band and become a mainstream artist. In the chorus lead singer Tyler Joseph proclaims, “this song will never be on the radio.” This is unlikely to occur given twenty one pilots previous airplay on alternative radio stations and the sheer fact that “Fairly Local” is extremely catchy.

“Fairly Local” has begun to build up hype for the release of Blurryface, and has shed light on what the new album will sound like. Fans only have two months to wait for new music. If the rest of Blurryface is anything like “Fairly Local,” the album is sure to make waves in the alternative music scene.
