Toronto folk-rockers The Strumbellas released their third album, Hope, on April 22. This 11-track album is filled with catchy positive lyrics that only brighten your day.
The Strumbellas are composed of 6 band members and released their debut EP in 2009. The louder sound that differentiates Hope from previous albums was first noticed with featured single “Spirits.” This song is currently all over the radio and is impossible to not sing along with.
Just like “Spirits,” songs such as “Wars” and “Young & Wild” provide foot-stomping tunes that build momentum all the way up to huge, happy sing-along choruses.
While most of the songs on Hope are upbeat, they do slow it down and show their folky roots on songs such as “Shovels and Dirt” and “I Still Make Her Cry.” Lyrically, this album stays true to its name, with each song inspiring some form of hope.
My personal favorite song from the album is “We Don’t Know.” This is because, being a college student, there are so many unknowns and this song preaches the value in having a positive outlook when embracing these unknowns.
Overall, Hope is a good-hearted, fun listen and perfect for any summer playlist.
The Strumbellas will be at the Merriweather Post Pavilion on June 26 2016.
