Playlist: The Many Styles of Danger Mouse

Producers are often overlooked when it comes to critical examinations of albums or individual songs. Credit is often given to the artists, and while that credit is often duly deserved, many do not recognize the countless hours of work producers put into crafting a record into its final product. A producer’s style can directly influence the sound of a finished product. George Martin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin are prominent examples – their musical talent has helped bands such as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and the Beastie Boys rise to commercial and critical prominence.

Brian Burton, born in July of 1977, also known by his stage name, Danger Mouse, is a producer whose music has reached millions. The winner of five Grammy Awards, Danger Mouse has had a lucrative career in the music biz, working with artists such as Adele, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Keys, U2, and Norah Jones. Although Rolling Stone named Burton as the ‘best producer in Rock’ in 2008, many are still unfamiliar with his name. Danger Mouse has a tendency to shy away from the spotlight, preferring to hand over all the fame to the artists he helps get off the ground.

Burton is also an active touring musician. He was co-founder of Gnarls Barkley, best know for their hit “Crazy,” as well as Broken Bells, an indie rock outfit he formed with the Shins’ frontman James Mercer.

The following is a playlist highlighting Danger Mouse’s best contributions to rock and hip-hop. It highlights his ability to shift seamlessly from genre to genre, emphasizing his musical skill and ability.
