Preview: Last Dinosaurs at the 9:30 Club on 3/17

Since their formation in 2007, Brisbane’s Last Dinosaurs have quietly made a name for themselves amongst the indie rock scene, constantly pushing the creative boundaries of the genre. Last Dinosaurs existed long before it actually became a band—Sean Caskey and Dan Koyama met in high school, properly writing music for the first time in a band called The Cairos. Since then, Caskey’s brother Lachlan joined as lead guitarist and Koyama left the band, but the Dinos continue to pump out an ever-evolving amalgamation of catchy guitar riffs and infectious rhythms. The band name itself was inspired by the Japanese alternative rock band The Pillows, who released a song titled “The Last Dinosaur” in 1999. While all three band members have Japanese heritage, they claim this identity did not play a factor when choosing their name.

While the Dinos have received significant acclaim for their 2024 concept album KYORYU, their self-titled 2025 tour celebrates the success and longevity of the band’s career. Yumeno Garden (2018) remains Last Dinosaurs’ most famous album, bolstered by their recent decision to reprint exclusive vinyl repressings and release an alternative EP dedicated to spotlighting a diverse selection of Filipino and Indonesian artists. In this way, see the band’s growth; on the heels of opening for Bad Suns, the Dinos have stepped up, delivering a new level of emotion and artistry on stage.

Last Dinosaurs will perform at Washington, D.C.’s iconic 9:30 Club on Monday, March 17 joined by Tipling Rock and Jasper Bones. Fans can anticipate a setlist that spans the band’s diverse discography, from early hits like “Zoom” to more recent tracks that showcase their matured sound. Tickets are available for purchase at 930.com and at the venue doors.
