Preview: Lil Uzi Vert @ Fillmore Silver Spring

According to Noisey, “Lil Uzi Vert is, for better or for worse, yanking people into the future, a world in which rap is a swirling kaleidoscope of post-regional styles and post-genre sounds . . . Uzi is the proper arrival, pushing that sound into more colorful, gleeful territory with the help of a murderers’ row of current producers.” If that doesn’t sound like some kind of hazy, twenty-first century New School Rap prophecy, I don’t know what does.

There’s no denying it: Lil Uzi Vert (real name: Symere Woods) has been inescapable this past year. In 2016 alone, the twenty-two-year-old – the color of whose characteristic dreads seems to change weekly – has appeared as a guest or featured artist on cuts from Young Thug, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Esco, Migos, A$AP Ferg, DJ Drama, Travi$ Scott, and the A$AP Mob. After being picked up by superproducer Don Cannon’s label Generation Now (in partnership with Atlantic) in late 2015, Uzi released a string of hugely successful mixtapes, including Luv is Rage (2015), Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World (2016), and The Perfect Luv Tape (2016). Prolific output aside, the man is, alongside the far-from-dead Meek Mill, literally putting Philadelphia back on the map. In his profile interview as a part of the annual XXL Magazine freshman list, he described the city as having “a lot of haters, a lot of people that support me . . . but way more haters.” As reported by Uzi, “there aren’t really a lot of people that come out of there, so when you make it out of Philadelphia, everywhere else is easy.”

Supported by both Quinn and DJ Bo, the North Philly-native will be bringing his frenetic live show to the Fillmore Silver Spring on December 20th and 21st. Appropriately titled ‘A Very Uzi Christmas,’ it’s sure to be a ripper.
