Preview: Omar Apollo @ 9:30 Club 5/14

Based on what track you’re listening to, it’s difficult to pinpoint what genre Omar Apollo’s discography best fits into. Perhaps the artist’s rejection of artistic conformity is the exact reason why he’s now found himself leading the next wave of up-and-coming music artists.

The 24-year-old Omar Apollo is one-of-a-kind, and so is his production style– breaking through the R&B and indie-pop scenes, he’s cultivated a cult following of fans that is quickly growing. The artist pays homage to his upbringing in his music, with Spanish-English influence and psychedelia running throughout his discography.

Noticed for his unfiltered talent, Apollo has collaborated with major artists across diverse genres, such as Albert Hammond Jr., Joji, Bootsy Collins, and Dominic Fike, among many others. Apollo’s debut LP, titled Ivory, is no different. The album’s release in early April 2022 brought back a track with Uchis, as well as a new collaboration with Daniel Caesar. Apollo has also been working with Pharrell Williams, who is credited as a producer for the promotional release track titled “Tamagotchi”, as well as for multiple unreleased tracks.

The rougher, more alternative sound of Deb Never and the bilingual indie-pop fusion of Niko Rubio provide the perfect opening acts for Omar Apollo’s sold-out performance. The juxtaposition of energy and styles in these three individuals gives concert-goers a curious confidence in what to expect for the night’s set. Join Omar Apollo, supported by Deb Never and Niko Rubio, for his performance at a sold-out 9:30 Club on Saturday, May 14.
