Mild Minds has made his return to the US for the first time since 2023 and he did not disappoint. Fresh with energy for the first show of his tour, Benjamin David, the man behind Mild Minds, brought rhythmic energy to the sold-out show at The Atlantis on February 7th.
The Atlantis venue opened its doors on May 30, 2023, catering to newer artists as compared to its sister venue 9:30 Club which happens to be right next door. The Atlantis was designed to mimic the original 9:30 Club. It has a metal facade with backlighting that is eye-catching on the streets of Shaw. The venue houses three floors. The main floor level has the stage, merchandise stand, a bar, and a decent amount of floor space, but certainly less than the 9:30 club. The second floor hosts wrap-around balcony views and a bar, but the real spot to check out is the rooftop. Modeled after the streets of New York City, the rooftop has storefront facades around the perimeter, a phone booth to pose for a photo-op, and chairs and table to sit at while waiting for the concert to start.
After enjoying the rooftop, I headed downstairs to prepare for the beginning of the show. The crowd was excited from the teenage boys at the barricade to the packs of couples in their 30s and my group of girls in their 20s. Suddenly, Mild Minds appeared at the table with a ring of lights surrounding him. Immediately greeting the crowd with a smile, he welcomed everyone to the first night of his tour. He wasted no time beginning to mix his songs live. He mixed numerous tracks together to build his background while singing live. He bounced through his discography mixing songs from his upcoming album, GEMINI, with other singles and songs from his 2020 album MOOD.
The crowd swayed and yelped along with those on the balcony visibly jumping about. Graphics of cityscapes, water, and eyes flowed across the wall behind him building each song’s mood and message. There was a mix in the crowd of those singing almost all lyrics right alongside David and those enjoying some of the songs for the first time. It was at his second to last song, “FORMATIONS,” his most popular track that phones were pulled out left and right to capture the moment. The crowd lit up alongside David to celebrate his return to the States and kick-off his US tour with a bang in the capitol.
