Single Review: Childish Gambino, “Eat Your Vegetables”

Posted by on April 15th 2012 0

Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) has been a very, very busy man this past year, with the confusion surrounding his show, Community, and the release of a full-length LP, Camp. Gambino brings a new feel with this single (listen here).

It is slower paced, more deliberate, and darker. It is more than evident that Childish is maturing and evolving as a rapper, refusing to remain stagnant by dwelling on past successes. Lyrics like “But nobody cares like it’s J-Cole Diggy/Jordon Diddy on my stereo/High on shrooms like Mario/Salvia, shamanic drugs” reflect a willingness to explore territory beyond childhood nostalgia or the culture-shock associated with sudden fame. I anxiously await the new mixtape that this will supposedly be featured on.
