WGTB Presents: U.S. Royalty

Posted by on April 9th 2012 0

If the name U.S. Royalty doesn’t ring a bell yet, listen up. These guys have been earning accolades from the likes of Spin, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Esquire and NPR since the 2011 release of their debut record, Mirrors, and are set to hit the Sweetlife stage for a second year running. But this Saturday, April 14th, at 8:30pm, WGTB is teaming up with Sweetgreen and Relay for Life to bring you an intimate look at these DC-based rockers right in our own Bulldog Alley. Opening up for U.S. Royalty, we’re lucky to welcome some DC royalty with John Davis and Chris Richards of Q and Not U as well as our Battle of the Bands winners, Law Abiding Criminals!

Tickets will be $3 in advance / $5 at the door
To pick up your ticket, you can find us outside of Midnight on Lau 2 from 9-11 Tuesday (4/10) to Thursday (4/12). We’ll also be tabling with tickets in Red Square from 12-3pm Wednesday (4/11) to Friday (4/13).

In honor of the event, some of our exec board members and DJs have brought a cut from U.S. Royalty‘s debut to life in this trailer that imagines U.S. Royalty as a hypothetical live action, American history-themed, celebrity death match-type reality show where the winner earns the right to reign over these United States as monarch. Enjoy and see you Saturday night! Read More »

Well, it is over. But it was fantastic! Thanks to all who made it out to Bulldog Alley, even in the rain, on Saturday for our first ever Block Party concert featuring killers sets from ReptarRA the MCMercies and Get A Tan. We didn’t have sunshine and burgers, but we did have Sunshine and pizza, as well as face painting from GU Art Aficionados, giveaways from The Body Shop, snazzy new WGTB cups, and lots and lots of dancing. Thanks to all who helped make it a success, and to the bands for putting on such rocking sets. WGTB <3s you. Read More »

Show of the Week: Nothing But A G-O-D Thang

the man behind the curtain

Show: Nothing But A G-O-D Thang
On-Air: Tuesdays 3-4 PM
DJs: Alex “Sunshine” Podkul, COL ’13

Curated by our very own tech director, Nothing But A G-O-D Thang eases your mind every Tuesday afternoon with witty banter, Alex’s music picks, and a solid base of Christian ethics (as evidenced by his answers below). In Alex’s own words, he should be show of the week because he’s good-looking, he’s dedicated, he’s dedicated to being good-looking, and best of all if we highlight his show the university won’t sell our station again. Plus, he’s interviewed bands upon bands on his show, and there are never any technical difficulties! Check out some highlights about Alex and Nothing But A G-O-D Thang below, and listen to his sample playlist. Then tune in every Tuesday from 3-4 p.m.

Interview: Jonathan Cook, Forever the Sickest Kids

When Jonathan Cook of the band Forever the Sickest Kids isn’t conducting circle pits, showing his appreciation for security guards wearing cowboy hats, or sitting down with Charlie Sheen for a casual afternoon conversation, he conducts interviews.  A lot of interviews.  However, in order to conduct this interview, I had to find him.  As I went on my quest, walking past scores of 14 year old girls waiting for doors to open, I finally found their manager.  While I walked on to the FTSK tour bus, I was approached by a very mellow Jonathan (very unsuspecting due to his contagious hyperactivity on stage).  As we walked to the back to find some peace and quiet for the interview, he and FTSK’s band manager Brandon discussed the upcoming NCAA tournament viz.

Georgetown Basketball.  Once the interview got started, there was no going back.  Many of the questions were provided by you, the WGTB listener, and I thank you for your support of this project.  Be sure to listen in below to hear his dulcet voice explain the important things in life, including (but not limited to) FTSKU, Charlie Sheen, Robots v. Aliens, and The North American Low Rider Association.  As they say, enjoy. Read More »

Interview: Seventh Day Slumber Talks Christian Rock

Tuesday’s broadcast of Nothing But A G-O-D Thang started typically: an over enthusiastic welcoming, too many good wishes to the listeners, and ridiculous facts of the day (Congrats to the Boy Scouts of America for their 101st Birthday).  However, it was a special day when Joseph Rojas of Seventh Day Slumber gave us a call.  After muffing a few questions and nervously trying to get a normal sounding conversation started, it happened.  I struck a “chord”.  When I asked Joseph about his definition of Christian Rock music, he really became passionate.  Listen below to check out his response!
