WGTB Presents: U.S. Royalty

Posted by on April 9th 2012 0

If the name U.S. Royalty doesn’t ring a bell yet, listen up. These guys have been earning accolades from the likes of Spin, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Esquire and NPR since the 2011 release of their debut record, Mirrors, and are set to hit the Sweetlife stage for a second year running. But this Saturday, April 14th, at 8:30pm, WGTB is teaming up with Sweetgreen and Relay for Life to bring you an intimate look at these DC-based rockers right in our own Bulldog Alley. Opening up for U.S. Royalty, we’re lucky to welcome some DC royalty with John Davis and Chris Richards of Q and Not U as well as our Battle of the Bands winners, Law Abiding Criminals!

Tickets will be $3 in advance / $5 at the door
To pick up your ticket, you can find us outside of Midnight on Lau 2 from 9-11 Tuesday (4/10) to Thursday (4/12). We’ll also be tabling with tickets in Red Square from 12-3pm Wednesday (4/11) to Friday (4/13).

In honor of the event, some of our exec board members and DJs have brought a cut from U.S. Royalty‘s debut to life in this trailer that imagines U.S. Royalty as a hypothetical live action, American history-themed, celebrity death match-type reality show where the winner earns the right to reign over these United States as monarch. Enjoy and see you Saturday night! Read More »

Playlist: Spring Break

Posted by on March 5th 2012 0

As I sit curled up under two blankets on my couch telling my friends for the second and third times that yes, I am already on spring break, I can’t help but think that Georgetown gets it wrong. I understand. Really, I do. Any later into March and spring break would be too close to Easter, but come on — 40 degree highs and knitwear? This isn’t what spring break is about. It’s about enjoying rising temperatures or surf-side destinations, breaking out the cutoffs and bathing suits, soaking up the rays and sipping on tropical-flavored beverages. But if we can’t have that, we can at least have the soundtrack that goes with it: driving beats, jangly riffs, breezy lo-fi melodies. So grab your NSO shades, turn on the heat lamp and dig into these 16 cuts ranging from 1966 to 2012 and from The Beach Boys to Georgetown’s very own Text Message after the jump! Read More »

Do you love music? Do you have Hoya pride? If you answered yes to both of those questions, Grasping At Straws needs your help! The student band, featuring Anatole Doak (COL ’12) and Matt Galizia (COL ’12) as well as Charlie Burgoyne and Chris Harold, is playing in a Battle of the Bands this Sunday 2/19. Depending on how many tickets they sell by Thursday, they’ll either get to play a smaller venue like DC9 or the Rock N Roll Hotel or the ultimate DC stage at the 9:30 Club. Additionally, the winner of each venue will get 15 hours of studio time and $500. Watch this acoustic session we did with Anatole and if you’re interested in helping these guys to the big stage at the 9:30 Club, make sure to check out the details after the jump! Read More »

Playlist: Late (for) Fall

Midterms finally came to an end; and when we collectively wandered bleary-eyed out of the depths of Lau, we realized autumn was upon us. Just as we began wrapping ourselves up in jackets and scarves and digging into our favorite pumpkin-flavored goodies, we found the leaves had changed and fallen and mid-November was here already. We were late for fall. But a few leaves are still clinging to the branches, and autumn’s got at least one more weekend of clear blue skies and crisp temperatures left in it. WGTB suggests you savor it while you can, and we made you this playlist to help. Warm up a mug of apple cider, settle down in a pile of leaves and click through to take a listen.

Recap: DJs Old and New Reunite at AlumLive

Picture 1

After the Homecoming tailgate on Saturday, a very special event took place in Bulldog Alley– AlumLive, the first reunion of WGTB DJs from throughout the station’s history. DJs from the 1960s to the present took the stage to share powerful stories of their time at WGTB and what it meant to them. Along the back wall, an exhibit displayed our huge collection of archives, including original FCC licenses, internal memos regarding the station shut-down, and playlists from different decades. I think I speak for everyone that attended when I say it was a very meaningful and moving atmosphere, bringing our WGTB community closer even across generations, celebrating our common experience. In case you missed it, here is a video recap of the stories they shared and a slideshow of pictures to catch you up.
