The Importance of Fathers to Girls Who Love Music

I was twelve with an attitude, riding in the passenger seat of my dad’s ancient white Toyota that he’d had since college, having been conned into a trip to the video rental store where I’d no doubt endure the inevitable argument with my dad over which movie to rent (twelve wants and needs no part of Blazing Saddles or Dr. Strangelove, and you can still turn out to be a complete and interesting and fulfilled person, a person who even studies film, despite spending your tween years watching Blue Crush.)

So we’re in the car, cruising around the Philadelphia suburbs on the way to pick up a movie for me and my sisters, and today’s spontaneous, unsolicited knowledge-imparting lecture turns out to be on the greatness of the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel (you may have heard of them), whose song had just come on the radio. A Sunday Kind of Love: Meet Etta.

It’s Sunday. It’s muggy, bright, approaching 100 degrees in Washington. It’s mid-June, two weeks out from Memorial Day, and the next long weekend isn’t until July 4th, which, with all of its exuberance and sociability and rah-rah red white and blue seems lightyears away from this slow, hot Sunday morning bookended by slow, hot weekdays.

WHAT DO WE LISTEN TO?

Happy 70th, Bob Dylan: A Plea

“My name it is nothing, my age it means less,” sings the lonesome wailing troubadour in “God on Our Side,” the man who celebrates his 70th birthday today and a lifetime of shaping American music. Ha. His name does mean something — quite a lot, actually — and his age is the subject of many, many columns today in the New York TimesHuffington Post,Time, and pretty much every major news source. Take Cover: Meet Me in a Pillar of Fire

The Tallest Man on Earth w/ his fiancee, Amanda
“I’ll Be Glad” (Bonnie Prince Billy)
If this doesn’t melt your heart into a big bleeding mess, you don’t have one to begin with. They’re so in love! And adorable. And talented. And who knew BPB aka Will Oldham’s close-to-gospel song could be turned into the loveliest love song? It’s a far jump from his pathologically loaded (though stunning) funeral dirges. (He’s been covered pretty notably before, too.) Check out the original “I’ll Be Glad” here, the organ is super nice.

Synesthesia: Eat, Pray, Love

I don’t know how anyone could have missed Elizabeth Gilbert‘s memoir Eat Pray Love when it came out in 2006––literally every single person (female) I knew on Earth had read it by the end of summer 2007, myself included, and half of those people again had made vows to attempt a similar experiment–to throwing the shackles off! A quick summary of the memoir’s plot: “[Eat, Pray, Love] chronicles [Gilbert's] trip around the world after her divorce and what she discovered during her travels.” Let me jump in and give away the ending: she discovers herself, and how to be happy. Classic plot twist! It took the movie industry exactly three seconds to capitalize on the book’s unprecedented success and make a movie adaptation. Read More »

Take Cover: Time To Pretend

Jonsi – “Time To Pretend” (MGMT)

It’s not like MGMT is immensely cover-able. It’s a weird fluke that this has come up twice in such a short time span. But this is impressively clean for a live recording, and the Sigur Ros frontman delicately changes the arrangement of the song. I’ll let the recording speak for itself: Read More »

Synesthesia: Charlie St. Cloud Trailer (New Column!)

Posted by on August 2nd 2010 0

Welcome to the first installment of SYNESTHESIA, in which DJ Fiona Hanly does a close-read of upcoming movie trailers, evaluating them based on (what else?) but the soundtrack. Better make those two minutes count, people who make movie trailers!

by Fiona Hanly

Here’s a look at the music used in the Charlie St. Cloud trailer, which is otherwise rubbish as it is compiled of scenes cut from a rubbish film. There are so many reasons that this will be the worst movie of all time, and this is only a two-and-a-half minute preview of them. Boo, Charlie St. Cloud! Read More »
