Guild of Bands Showcase Tonight!

Forget the basketball game tonight. Hoya Saxa? You know what really rocks? Guild of Bands. Come by Walsh Black Box (walk in to Walsh and hang a right) from 8-11pm tonight for the Guild of Bands Showcase! Over the course of the semester, these bands have been rocking the depths of New North working out covers and original material and preparing their sets for tonight’s showcase. So come out and support your fellow students and hear some great music without even having to leave campus. Check out the order of bands and estimated set times after the jump!

Welcome to Rock City: GEMA Rocks, May 4-5 in Gonda Theater!

The annual GEMA Rocks concert is a Georgetown tradition that you don’t want to miss (although if you can’t make it out to Gonda, you can still catch the live stream of Saturday’s performance on WGTB!). This year’s performers include a slew of GU alums who have made it big in music, comedy, and television, and they’re going to put on a killer show representing six decades of Hoya talent.

And it’s coming up in just a few days!

The concert, sponsored by the Georgetown Entertainment and Media Alliance, is not only a great representation of musical ability and a rocking good time, but is a great networking opportunity for any WGTB DJs (or fans!) interested in a career in media or entertainment.

The show will feature a variety of songs written by alums and students as well as covers, including a really fantastic cover of Bon Iver’s “Holocene”. WGTB’s own Tate Tucker will be performing as well.

WGTBoard in “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell”

WGTB Board & Friends take a field trip to the combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell in Hoya Court in anticipation of DAS RACIST’s arrival in Bulldog Alley for the fall concert this Saturday, November 19th with Millionyoung and Paperhaus. You won’t want to miss out. Ticket information after the jump!

Tickets go on sale this week at a variety of times and places (listed below), so you have no excuse not to get one. Pre-sale tickets go for the low low price of $3. We’ll forgive you if you’re too busy to track us down, though, and let you snag a ticket at the door Saturday night (if the show doesn’t sell out pre-sale) for $5.

AlumLive: A WGTB Reunion, Saturday 10/22

We hope to see you all this Saturday, Oct. 22, from 5:30-7:30 in Bulldog Alley as we gather to have a reunion of WGTB alumni and current DJs! We’re really excited about this event, and we hope you can all make it.

WHAT: The stage in Bulldog will have an open mic where folks can take turn telling stories of their time with the station (crazy stories encouraged!). In the back of the room, there will be an exhibit detailing the history of the station, from its anti-Communist foundings in 1946 to the station shutdown in ’79 to the resurrection of the FM signal, briefly, in the 90s. We have a lot of cool memos and photos from that time, including archival materials donated by W. Royal Stokes, former DJ. You definitely will want to check those out.

In addition, there is a student documentary in the works on the history of WGTB, and a small film crew will be set up in the studio doing interviews with some of you. We will also film the open mic storytelling.
The studio will be open to see, though we’ll do the broadcasting straight from Bulldog Alley. We will be selling t-shirts ($10) and giving away our cool bumper stickers. Refreshments will be served!

WHERE: If you’re walking through the front gates of campus, take the path to the right, all the way to Red Square (literally a red brick patio, with the ICC Building in it.) Continue through the archway in Red Square, up the steps along the path to the Leavey Center. Go into the Leavey Center and go immediately to the back, past the coffee shop, to the food court where you will see our WGTB Studio in the corner. Bulldog Alley is immediately behind the studio. There will be signs. No permission or ID is necessary to come on campus or to the Leavey Center.
Parking is available in the garage beneath Leavey, or in the SouthWest Quad garage, accessed from Canal Road. Parking may be especially crowded because it is Homecoming weekend. Street parking is limited to two hours in the Georgetown zone.
WHO: All are welcome, bring your families, friends, neighbors, university administrators.

Concert Pick of the Week: All Things Gold presents Reptar, Penguin Prison, RAC

A few months ago, the motley crue also known as ecstatic funk-poppers Reptar graced our tiny stage in Bulldog Alley for WGTB’s Block Party, and they absolutely rocked it. Since then, the Athens band has been making big strides, including a recent contract signing with Vagrant Records. Pop bottles!

In case you missed them then, or if you are jonesing for more, the cool dudes at All Things Go have teamed up with Neon Gold Records to put on a smorgasbord of good tunes this Thursday night, called All Things Gold.

Head to U St. Music Hall (one of our favorite venues) on Thursday at 8 pm and stay until close to check out four acts of killer music. Reptar will kick things off with a live set, followed by a DJ set from Brenton Duvall, then Penguin Prison live followed by indie-remix kings RAC. You can get your tickets here.

Cinematic Recap: WGTB’s Spring Open Mic

A little while ago we had our annual Open Mic night (if you missed last year’s, you can catch up here) in Bulldog Alley. As always it was a really enjoyable evening of music, slam poetry, and a whole lot of acoustic guitars, and the house was packed. We recorded all of it and have posted it here for you.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a video? I don’t do math, as a policy, but it seems like that would be a ton of words, so here, then, are a lot of words. Never mind that these are a bit belated; memories fade but videos are forever! WGTB’s Block Party: It’s Not Over Til It’s Over! Photos And One Last Rescued Video

Well, it is over. But it was fantastic! Thanks to all who made it out to Bulldog Alley, even in the rain, on Saturday for our first ever Block Party concert featuring killers sets from Reptar, RA the MC, Mercies and Get A Tan. We didn’t have sunshine and burgers, but we did have Sunshine and pizza, as well as face painting from GU Art Aficionados, giveaways from The Body Shop, snazzy new WGTB cups, and lots and lots of dancing. Thanks to all who helped make it a success, and to the bands for putting on such rocking sets. WGTB <3s you.

You may remember the anticipation leading up to the event, aided by hot new dance moves from our very own Thayer and Sunshine. We left you in the lurch on Thursday when we hit technical difficulties, but in an unprecedented stroke of luck, THE FINAL VIDEO HAS BEEN RECOVERED! Sure, the event is over, but these dance moves are forever.

This video now occupies a weird and magical post-event nostalgia in the abyss of time where every moment is occurring simultaneously and hard drives never crash; plus, you get to act like it’s a Friday on a Monday! It’s the best of all weird, timeless worlds. So without further ado, please enjoy this anachronistic vid, and check out some photos of the event below.

And neither does WGTB. You can find Thayer and the rest of the festivities in Bulldog Alley, where we will cut the tile, feast on free pizza, collect rain water in the free WGTB cups and enjoy some great bands together. Do you like music? What about food? A fan of spring weather? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, you should probably mark your calendar for this Saturday, April 16th and plan on making your way over to Copley Lawn between 2:30 and 6pm for free music, free burgers and free (fingers crossed) sunshine. Now that you have that worked into your schedule, count down the days with WGTB’s own Thayer Frechette and Alex “Sunshine” Podkul who are bringing you new dance moves every day of this week to get you ready to get your groove on to Reptar, RA the MC, Mercies and Get A Tan.
