It’s easy to get wrapped up in this world of $2 PBR happy hours and mirage-producing city streets and forget that there is a world out there where nature extends beyond the manmade realms of Roosevelt Island and the National Zoo.

Every once in a while though, when I can’t stand the thought of watching another tourist stuff a Georgetown Cupcake in her sweaty toddler’s mouth after they both waited three hours in the 100-degree-plus-humidity line of equally fat, sweaty tourists, I can’t help but think, you know what DC? I love you, but you’re bringing me down. On days like this, with the weekend so close yet so far, I’ve started looking for songs that allow me to transcend the confines of the city without having to use up any valuable vacation days.

Former Music Board Director and Overall Good Guy Igor German (of Abditum fame) recently turned me onto Grand Child, an Austin-based folk music project who have been around for a few years but are as of yet unsigned, and who totally get my need to live vicariously through people sitting around with their friends in the woods, jamming on mandolins and painting each others’ faces. After accidentally wandering into a venue in Texas where the scheduled headliner bailed and Grand Child stepped in to fill the spot, Igor fell in star-crossed love. Good Guy that he is, Igor came back from the dead (shout out Georgetown University Class of 2011!) to share his find with us and we’ve been spinning them ever since.

Grand Child’s strength lies in that they manage to be nostalgic without being trite, hip without being obnoxious, and sunny without being saccharine. When I’m straight flippin’ copies or I feel particularly oppressed by The Man, I can close my eyes, let the melody from whatever obscure string instrument they’ve got going on wash over me and for the moment I can smell the s’mores, feel the flora-filtered light, and return from my four-minute sojourn refreshed and ready to take on the City again.

Listen to: “I Know” and “A Song to Die To” both off My Head Is In The Clouds (all of which is available for download on Bandcamp)

Another half of an arbitrary 365 day cycle has come and gone, sunrise by sunset, offering a friendly occasion to recap how many gems we’ve seen in 2011.5 already. Click through for five of Music Director Emma Forster’s favorite albums so far, the last in our installment of Best Music On The Planet As Dictated By WGTB Music Board Dictat…Directors (make sure you check out Catherine and Mikey’s picks).

Lykke Li: Wounded Rhymes

There is something about Lykke. Maybe it’s her cool, eclectic, Swedish charm. Maybe it’s that instead of slumping, her sophomore album surpassed Youth Novels and solidified her place as an indie icon. It’s actually probably just the adorably weird dance moves. Whatever it is, keep it up Ms. Li: I love this album.

♫ Listen to “I Know Places,” and even better, check out the video, which really makes the song for me.

frank ocean: nostalgia/ultra

I was tempted to put Tyler the Creator’s Goblin on this list, just because I feel like despite its unbridled obscenity it’s worth noting as a breakthrough album this year. I remember where I was whenGoblin dropped (Lauinger Library, 4th floor cubicle, Japanese Art final looming), and I remember sloughing through it thinking “I want this to be so good. This is pretty good. Please stop saying the eff word.” The album was long and intense, but pleasantly broken up with some interesting add-ins featuring Hodgy Beats and the—somewhat out of place in this crowd—frank ocean.

Two months later, I’ve found that full-on OFWGKTA has outworn their welcome, but frank ocean’s tracks on Goblin as well as his own nostalgia/ultra still hold a place in the playlist of my heart. ocean has it all: unapologetically sweet love songs, e e cummingsesque typography, and just the right combination of perfect poppy hip hop and smooth RMB. For 2011.5, honorable mention shout out to Goblin, but frank ocean’s plan to get at me through his music worked.

♫ Listen to “songs for women”

Smith Westerns: Dye it Blonde

It seems like forever ago that I sent Catherine this photo and asked her to go with me to see Smith Westerns play at the Rock ‘N Roll Hotel back in March. In the end, I couldn’t go but she went with Rotation writer Ani Zotti, who wrote a great review of the record, and I have been jealous ever since. Full of whimsy, pep, and optimism, Dye it Blonde is a huge step for Smith Westerns’s career which will, I’m sure, hold its own when all this .5 business is through.

♫ Listen to “Weekend”

Shabazz Palaces: Black Up

And the Longest, Most Non-Sequitor Track Titles Award goes to Shabazz Palaces. Seriously though, SB is basically doing what I hoped OFWGKTA would eventually do by eschewing all the blatant obscenity and letting the music speak for itself.

♫ Listen to “Swerve…The reeping of all that is worthwhile (Noir not withstanding)”

Jessica Lea Mayfield: Tell Me

Country gets a bad rap. Despite her double name and doleful twang, WGTB fave JLM has managed to transcend the stereotype and come out with the perfectly poignant (without being melodramatic) Tell Me. While I could listen to every song on here on repeat (and unashamedly have), I recommend that you start here:

♫ Listen to “Our Hearts Are Wrong”

Yesterday in Red Square, I walked up to a stranger with a huge, furry beard who was wearing a huge, furry Elmer Fudd hat and said, “You must be Englishman.”

Normally this might have been rude, or at least a little weird, as a) I hadn’t heard him speak and thus had no way of discerning his nationality from a linguistic standpoint, and b) I had never met him before in my life. Fortunately, this man smiled at me, extended his hand and said, “yes, I am.”

Englishman, song-vehicle for Lexington, KY native Andrew English (Vocals/Guitar) and Matt Duncan (Keyboard/Vocals) then proceeded to the Copley Formal Lounge and Jesuit graveyard where they performed two stripped-down songs off their new self-titled album. It must have been the ten snowy days spent recording on a farm in rural Ohio that prepared them for these austere, wintry venues but, despite the cold, English and Duncan’s rendition of “Classically Trained” transformed the Lounge into a cozy haven from the chill December wind, and even the frigid graveyard felt inviting, as English described the sky as a “layer cake” in his buttery, James Taylor-esque voice in “Boy T-Rex.”

After the show, Englishman packed their bags and headed up north to Pennsylvania to continue their winter tour, but they promised to return to campus when Persephone gets back from Turks and Caicos. In the meantime, if the impending snowpocalypse part deux has got you down, bundle up, grab some peppermint hot chocolate, and enjoy your own personal concert away from the cold and exam-ridden outside world.

Before WGTB went big time with our infiltration of the Internet, we had a quaint system of writing a few comments and an overall grade for each album on a post-it which would then be slipped into the CD case and tucked away on a shelf, rarely—if ever—to be dusted off and spun once more. Every once in a while, however, when I am late for class or have a huge paper due and need to find a great way to procrastinate, I like to go into the womb room and peruse the vast collection that is our Rotation.

Usually the CDs are arranged alphabetically, with a little orange sticker on the side of each jewel case denoting the year of the album’s release. However, because WGTB doesn’t have a personalized librarian (yet), sometimes things can get out of order. In fact, I kind of like things that way, because if they weren’t I may never have stumbled upon the lone, lost Review Slip which read:

“Artist: dios / Title: dios / Sounds like: Indescribable / Other comments: Very cool. So good that I can’t describe it. Very dark.”

“Indescribable … So good that I can’t describe it.” I quickly scanned the records for the “Ds” and sure enough, there was the review’s namesake. I whipped out my laptop and popped dios into my disk drive. Honestly, did I have a choice?

Nothing against “Nas,” the former WGTB Music Board member who previously rated the album, but I wouldn’t necessarily call dios “indescribable.” “Very cool” and “good,” for sure, but I think that all it takes to describe the album is a list of band’s inspirations. dios’s strength lies in the way they filter 60s rock influences through their own indie lens, merging tributes to the Beach Boys, Elliot Smith, and Neil Young to create a charming, West Coast, almost psychedelic sound. The laid-back, youthful sense of freedom in catchy riffs like “Starting Five” and “You Make Me Feel Uncomfortable” are smooth and familiar, evoking a spectrum of perfectly tuned, sincere adolescent emotions. Simultaneously accessible and profound, dios is unpretentious, easy-going, and full of potential.

So why hadn’t I ever heard of these guys? A quick Google search revealed that since 2004 dios has released three albums, all of which have sucked. They did have a track featured on the O.C. in 2005, but the coup de grace came when Italian-American heavy metal musician Ronnie James Dio sued the band for trademark infringement. After an arduous legal battle, the band rolled over in more ways than one, adding a parenthetical “(malos)” to their name and a less parenthetical element of banality to their sound. By the time dios (malos?) reverted back to the original one-word name in 2009, it was too late—nobody cared.

dios (malos?!) isn’t the first band to peak in their debut album, but it is sad to listen to how good dios is and know that the band’s energy would only go on to stagnate out there in middle-of-the-road rock oblivion. Lead singer Joel Morales seems to have predicted dios’s fate in “The Uncertainty of How Things Are,” when he asks the prophetic question, “If you saw me now / would you still believe in me / or run away?” I’m glad I found dios and I wouldn’t run away if they decided to put out another album, but it would have to be pretty special for me to believe in them again.

Fro-hawk coiffed to perfection, Twin Shadow—a.k.a. George Lewis Jr. and his three-piece touring band—kicked off the night, delighting the crowd with tracks from his highly touted debut album, Forget. The 40-minute set included “Shooting Holes,” “When We’re Dancing,” and “Castles in the Snow,” all dripping with retro-bent inspiration. Twin Shadow’s fresh, contemporary indie-pop sound incorporated a heavy 80s synth and disco-esque baselines (that wouldn’t have sounded out of place at the Pretty in Pink prom scene) which enthralled the room and set the bar high for Glasser.

Headline band, Glasser, gave more than a mere musical performance. The seemingly bare stage was set with a few bulky gadgets (which later turned out to be instruments) adorned with gilded streamers. The three male members of the band set up their equipment and returned moments later from backstage in green Ghostbusters-style jumpsuits complete with Franciscan-monk, triple-knotted ropes. Just as the audience began to question if the drummer’s (Rockband?) electronic drum kit had transported us all to a cyber-reality, a gamine female clad in red seemed to hover onto the stage and confirm our suspicions.

The UK’s Guardian describes the Glasser’s music as: “exist[ing] in a fluid space between prog, krautrock, systems music and electronica, all percussive loops, synth washes, bursts of instrumental improvisation, and meandering melodies sung with folkish wonder.” This is certainly no map to understanding Glasser’s method or to locate a niche within the “Alternative” genre for their unique style. This is alien territory.

Lead singer, Cameron Mesirow, appears as a genetically manipulated combination of Enya and Mary-Kate Olsen. Her vocals become a part of the percussive loops that connect one tropical hemisphere to another that is ancient and tribal–and lucky for us, Glasser brings us along for the ride. Performing a powerful duet with Glasser’s guitarist, Mesirow proved the multi-dimensional aspect of sound, as silent pauses played the song’s key component.

While Glasser seemed at first to be from a foreign corner of the Milky Way, the rhythmic beats and entrancing synths became a comfort. Mesirow’s ethereal dance and sway caught on to members of the audience and the combination of monastery garb and resounding organ effects may have missionary’d itself some new converts. If the Glasser alien starship is just taking off, allow me to get my passport.

After the show, WGTB caught up with George Lewis Jr. to discuss his influences, the tour with Glasser, and Twin Shadow’s future.

In 2009, the Los Angeles based indie sextet shrouded the release of their first album in secrecy, concealing the group members’ names and identities and issuing a press release in which they described themselves as sounding like “that mysterious black object that the creepy family is staring at on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s Presence album.” I mean, come on. Even after listening to their sophomore album, Part II: The New December—which admittedly does sound like that mysterious object (think enigmatic, wonky, a little bizarre)—I think that giving yourself description is a little on the pretentious side.

And so is Part II: The New December. Fol Chen’s official website provides little more than an intentionally vague and elusive video public service announcement featuring actor Brian Cox as insight into their new release (if you can call him reciting the lyrics from “In Ruins” insight: “Walking down the street tonight/Everything’s in ruins/You look good by siren light/Baby whatcha doin?” WTFol Chen?). To validate creating this kind of hype, whatever product you’re pushing had better be freaking rad.

The New December opens with three fairly strong tracks “The Holograms,” “In Ruins,” and “Curtain Call.” “Holograms,” full of odd digital blips and dark drum machine beats, sounds like it should be accompanied by a Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands factory line scene (I bet you love that description, don’t you, Fol Chen?). The rhythmic essence introduced here reappears throughout the eclectic rest of the album. “In Ruins,” one of the most cohesive songs on the album, includes both the original core strong tempo as well as some interesting piano and sugary vocals from singer Melissa Thorne. The beat from “Curtain Call” is catchy and reminiscent of the Dirty Projectors or Of Montreal, but with a unique, quirky spin.

The album proceeds to branch out stylistically, including everything form frenetic dance-pop beats to eerie whispering, all the while retaining the same whimsy underpinnings from earlier tracks. Although the sporadic, superficially disjointed nature of the album may come across as off-putting to more conservative listeners, it is hard not to garner an appreciation for the group’s creativity.

Fol Chen wants to be weird, which they accomplished, but it took me a while to care about that. It was hard to get past all the hype and listen to Fol Chen for what they are…but isn’t that the point? They have built up a labyrinthine mythology around their music, which can at times do more to distract than intrigue—but from what I can tell, they are interested in creating a distraction. Though it doesn’t quite live up to the mystique incited by Brian Cox’s dramatic monologue, Fol Chen’s unusual, almost discordant music stands on its own as, at least, a noteworthy experiment and a decent second album.

HEALTH:Disco::Get Color:Disco2. Anyone familiar with pre-2002 SAT analogy jargon can easily decipher that colon-enjambed phrase as “HEALTH’s self-titled debut album HEALTH is to Disco, the remix of said album, as Get Color, the same group’s second album is to Disco 2, the band’s second remix.” Duh.

If you didn’t follow that, or you’re from the Midwest and only ever took the ACTs, here’s the analogy in layman’s terms: Noise-punk band HEALTH made an album in 2007 called HEALTH. They then invited groups like Acid Girls, Narctrax, Nastique, and Thrust Lab to remix the entire album, the product of which they released in 2008 as Disco. Now, HEALTH has taken their 2009 album Get Color and had people like Crystal Castles, Small Black, Javelin, Gold Panda, and Pictureplane remix all of those songs into 2010’s Disco 2.

Still a little convoluted, but that’s the kind of thing one might expect from a group whose two full-length albums (to clarify, that’s HEALTH and Get Color) steer away from conventional musical properties like “rhythm” and “melody” and can more accurately be described simply as “noise.” HEALTH doesn’t even always fit that description; the first 20 seconds of the album are practically blank. While HEALTH drew criticism for being a weak imitation of noise-punk bands like Liars and Boredoms, HEALTH came closer to their goal of a synthesis of digital sound and quality dance beats with Disco and set themselves apart from the crowd.

Again, Get Color, the album on which Disco 2 is based, is more of a musical experiment than a traditional dance/pop album. However, in Get Color, HEALTH stepped up to the big league and out of the shadows of Liars and the like by introducing melody and dancibility, qualities missing in both HEALTH and, for the most part, Disco. Disco 2 predictably and proportionately climbs ever higher, as HEALTH’s strong points—a better original album and a well-practiced and developed handle on intricate synths and dance rhythms—converge.

Disco 2 reaches the balance lacking in previous albums. Tracks like the Cfcf remix of “Before Tigers” and Small Black’s take on “Severin” retain the well-crafted artistic interest of HEALTH’s originals, but transform the songs into addicting, wider-appealing versions. The album opens with “USA Boys”—not a remix but a brand new single from HEALTH that is right at home among the remixes—which sets the tone for the remainder of the CD and begs to be listened to on repeat. The rest of the album features a well-rounded mix of dance beats and ethereal, trance-y songs. While the good tracks are great, a couple of the middle songs, “In Violet (Salem Rmx)” for example, can revert to HEALTH’s older, jam-sesh style, which gets little boring. Fortunately, listening for and figuring out the overlaps in different remix versions is enough to keep you entertained through some of the more repetitive middle minutes.

Where HEALTH’s sound previously leaned towards noise, Disco 2 branches further out than before, creating a bridge between their old sound and more conventional dance music. “USA Boys” stands out as an example of the new path HEALTH seems to be headed down, and if they continue their pattern of full-length album followed by remix, then HEALTH’s next set should score high enough to get them into the college of their choice.

Recommendations: “USA Boys”, “Before Tigers Cfcf Rmx”, “Severin Small Black Rmx”
