Rolling: Figurines Play a Few Songs at the National Cathedral

Posted by on August 26th 2011 3

Picture 4

Holy moly, the Danes are charming. Even more so when we put them in the beautiful setting of the National Cathedral, our neighbor up Wisconsin Ave., where the acoustics are splendid and the neogothic architecture is lovely. And even more so when they are all smiles and cooperative, pleasant energy, even in a torrential rainstorm. And even MORE so when they play such upbeat, shambling tunes, with just enough garage-rock and psychedelic influences to back Christian Hjelm’s raw, harping vocals. Read More »

Rolling: The Ascetic Junkies on the Exorcist Stairs

More like exercist stairs, am I right?

We proposed another Music From Big Chair session to the Portland-based punky-folk rockers The Ascetic Junkies, but the band had another locale in mind: Georgetown’s famed exorcist stairs, so-called because of the scene in the 1973 horror flick The Exorcist. If you’re from the area, you’ve definitely seen it, 70′s film effects and all; Georgetown hosts a showing every Halloween in Gaston Hall. But in recent years the stairs have been better known for the quad-burning workout they offer (we caught some of these dedicated athletes in the video – thanks folks!) Read More »

Cinematic Recap: WGTB’s Spring Open Mic

Posted by on June 28th 2011 5

Screen shot 2011-06-28 at 3.31.34 PM

A little while ago we had our annual Open Mic night (if you missed last year’s, you can catch up here) in Bulldog Alley. As always it was a really enjoyable evening of music, slam poetry, and a whole lot of acoustic guitars, and the house was packed. We recorded all of it and have posted it here for you.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a video? I don’t do math, as a policy, but it seems like that would be a ton of words, so here, then, are a lot of words. Never mind that these are a bit belated; memories fade but videos are forever! Enjoy this footage of our variously talented student body and let us know what you enjoyed best in the comments. Track It Down: The Heavenly States, The Donkeys, About Group

For a second it seems Heavenly States’ “Berlin Wall” is only as good as it seems because of the borrowed pipes of none other than Britt Daniel. But the triumphant close washes away that sentiment just as forcefully as it does the simple fingerpicked intro, with drums explosive enough to tear down that wall itself. The rest of Oui Camera Ou falls short of this EP’s highlight, although the comic closer “Careful With That Review, Eugene” gives it all a new perspective. Enlisting Eugene Mirman of Flight of the Concords fame, some of the bands most negative reviews garnered from their first full length are delivered with attempted sincerity to mock the contrived self-importance blotting the blogosphere. So I suppose at the risk of being featured in their next epilogue I’ll just say “you guys rule” and step off the internet pulpit.

Hoppy Easter from WGTB

Posted by on April 24th 2011 2

The only thing rising faster than Jesus these days is that beautiful spring temperature, and with that every man, woman, child, and bunny can shake off cooped up agitation and let out the love. At times bordering on irreverent, desiring but not desperate for attention, and on the eternal quest for dance partners, snacks, and a place to shake his fluffy tail, Mike McClain took campus by storm to share WGTB’s love for spring at Georgetown. It doesn’t get much better. Where Georgetown Trains Bunnies? White Guy Tryna Bustamove? Whatever it is, we got the beat. Check out the Easter playlist after the jump paw-picked by the rabbit. Enjoy! Alela Diane: Online Benefit Concert

Posted by on April 17th 2011 1

Perhaps Bono has mastered/dominated the benefit concert scene in recent decades, but musically-devoted philanthropists need not join the mobs, hand holding, and heartfelt amplified speeches to take part in the movement. Recently Alela Diane played a benefit show in New York City on behalf of Housing Works, an organization “renowned for addressing the needs of people living with AIDS that other organizations deem ‘too challenging to serve’”. By offering a wide spectrum of services on wide-reaching fronts, Housing Works seeks to provide health care, legal services, housing, and AIDS prevention services to help those battling HIV/AIDS who are excluded from such help. Alela Diane, who recently released her third album on April 5, brought her warm folk to the challenge of fighting for the cause. Her increased activism comes with a stylistic shift, matching tender charity with a soulful croon rooted more deeply in dusty country tunes than anything else, and lyrics that empathize with pain and loneliness in brief timid bouts before scattering on. But where other benefit shows last a night, this takes an imaginative turn to increase participation.
