He’s received co-writing credit on many of their songs, including Accidentally in Love, for which he was nominated for an Oscar and a Grammy. He recently released a CD with a side project, called Tender Mercies, on the label Collective Sounds. Vickrey was interviewed by Mitchel Hochberg on Politricks, a political talk show that covers politicians’ tricks with conversation and humor. The interview covered a wind range of topics, including Tender Mercies, Counting Crows, and, of course, politics. Click through to listen to the full interview!

Welcome to WGTB’s Show of the Week column, where we highlight one exceptional segment of our on-air programming and tell you a bit more about the faces behind the voices, and why you should be tuning in.

Show: Attack of the Fanny Pack
On-Air: Wednesdays 8-9 pm
DJs: Hannah Klusendorf, COL 2012, aka “Hurricane Hannah Klusendorf”
Lauren Mahon, NHS 2012, aka Lauren “is the” Mahon
With WGTB since: Spring 2010
Attack of the Fanny Pack is a high-energy show from two dedicated DJs, Lauren and Hannah, who will light up your Wednesday night with nostalgic hits from the 90s, classics from artists like Tom Waits, and television show theme songs. Check out what they have to say in their own words, and give their playlist a spin below!

Why should you be WGTB’s Show of the Week?
Let’s face it, fanny packs are making a big comeback. Now, we don’t want to take 100% of the credit for its recent runway success (see Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and DVF), but is it a coincidence that for over a year now we have been blowing up the airwaves with our blend of pop culture idoltry, melodious tuneage, and continuous references to Lauren going to the same circus summer camp as David Blaine? We think not. As designers of radio style, we are committed to providing quality and original programming from Saved by the Bell tribute shows to recreations of everyone’s favorite 70s game show, The Dating Game. And, I guarantee that fun is always in season on Attack of the Fanny Pack. We also have a very dedicated (and volatile) fan base. They are currently holding us captive in the bowels of the Leavey parking lot. If you don’t meet their demands (aka giving us the Show of the Week), they are saying that our life-sized Whitney Houston poster gets it. For the love of all that is Whitney Houston-licious, pick us!!

If you could host anyone on your radio show, who would you pick, and why?
We would pick Bobby Brown. Why? Consult this video. Because, like Lauren, he’s been to jail. And that, my friends, makes for a true American. If you need anymore convincing, throw in his tumultuous marriage to Whitney Houston, the classic “My Prerogative,” and the fact that he named his daughter with Whitney, Bobbi Kristina, after himself, and you’ve got yourselves a winner.

You’re having a theme party. What’s the theme?
As worshippers at the altar of theme party-dom, we have quite the doozy of a shindig in the works: DISNEY CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIES (lovingly referred to by devotees as DCOMs). Think about it. In our expert opinion, there are approximately 90 DCOMs. The possibilities are nearly endless: Johnny Tsunami, Smart House, Luck of the Irish, Halloweentown, Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook-off, the Zenon trilogy, Johnny Tsunami, The Thirteenth Year, Brink!, Quints, High School Musical, The Cheetah Girls, Motocrossed, Alley Cats Strike, Famous Jett Jackson: The Movie, The Color of Friendship, Up, Up, and Away, and on and on (and thanks to countless hours of Sporcle practice we could). You know you have a favorite. You know that you have blades or a Hawaiian shirt or some futuristic neon spandex floating around your closet. How easy (and awesomely fun) would it be to become a Soul Skater, Johnny Tsunami, or Zenon for the night? So, let’s honor our Disney past. Honor DCOMs.

What’s love got to do with it?
Well, it’s a secondhand emotion, so we have to assume that it has to do with the spread of germs. And bacteria. And typhoid fever. And cholera. And the Black Plague. Legend has it that King Henry VIII contracted the “love bug” early on his kingship when he shook hands with the Prime Minister of Malaysia at the League of Nations. He traveled many moons in search of the Fountain of Youth to find a cure for his ailment but died tragically when he was attacked by Big Foot. His kin roamed the United States in search of the fabled fountain, and in time, they formed shanty towns (known as Hoovervilles) throughout the country. And, that’s how the West was won.

This past Saturday Peter Wolf Crier crammed their gear into our tiny WGTB studios and delivered a soulful performance of these four songs. The duo has built a strong base in Minnesota, and after recording Inter-Be, they joined Jagjaguar and started this short but intense national tour. The small crowd that gathered to check out their performance was delighted with the intimacy of the show and impressed with the atmospheric sound they were able to so naturally create. Read Fiona’s review of the album and listen to/download the four live tracks below!
