So you made if through that bloodbath alive, congratulations.

Lucky for all of us this finals week is a lot more like a transatlantic flight. It’s long and arduous, the air feels different, and you wish you could be moving your legs more often. You’ll probably spend the whole time wishing for it to end, but what can you do except buckle in, put on some music, and hope you’re sitting next to someone you like, or at least, someone who will leave their shoes on? And remember, at the end of this time you spend being held captive in Lau while having anxiety dreams in which you are chased by a gang of blood-thirsty blue books, something beautiful awaits you: your final destination. Which, if statistics prove to be correct, is most likely New Jersey.
You spend most of your time indoors trying to devise an ingenious scheme to make it out alive, or, in this case, to escape being reduced to a heap of tears in some dark corner of the library hoping the automated stacks will malfunction and put you out of your misery. Making it out alive, much like living through a zombie apocalypse, is really just a matter of mental fortitude. All those hours logged at Yates can’t save you from the impending onslaught of tests and papers; in fact, they may end up being your downfall. After all, it’s not your body the monster wants, it’s your brain. With this in mind here’s a playlist to remind you that there is a light at the end of the dark tunnel of bluebooks and page counts, and, much like the colony of human survivors you dream of as the zombie growls get louder and louder, winter break is out there somewhere. Click through to listen.

Yesterday in Red Square, I walked up to a stranger with a huge, furry beard who was wearing a huge, furry Elmer Fudd hat and said, “You must be Englishman.”

Normally this might have been rude, or at least a little weird, as a) I hadn’t heard him speak and thus had no way of discerning his nationality from a linguistic standpoint, and b) I had never met him before in my life. Fortunately, this man smiled at me, extended his hand and said, “yes, I am.”

Englishman, song-vehicle for Lexington, KY native Andrew English (Vocals/Guitar) and Matt Duncan (Keyboard/Vocals) then proceeded to the Copley Formal Lounge and Jesuit graveyard where they performed two stripped-down songs off their new self-titled album. It must have been the ten snowy days spent recording on a farm in rural Ohio that prepared them for these austere, wintry venues but, despite the cold, English and Duncan’s rendition of “Classically Trained” transformed the Lounge into a cozy haven from the chill December wind, and even the frigid graveyard felt inviting, as English described the sky as a “layer cake” in his buttery, James Taylor-esque voice in “Boy T-Rex.”

After the show, Englishman packed their bags and headed up north to Pennsylvania to continue their winter tour, but they promised to return to campus when Persephone gets back from Turks and Caicos. In the meantime, if the impending snowpocalypse part deux has got you down, bundle up, grab some peppermint hot chocolate, and enjoy your own personal concert away from the cold and exam-ridden outside world.

If you haven’t heard of Miniature Tigers you should probably go straight to a mirror and give yourself a “where have you been?” look and then buy their sophomore album Fortress. Filled with infectious beats and lyrics that forge the extraordinary from the quotidian, their music is sure to get your head bobbing and your eyes seeing colors you didn’t even know existed (as you can see here, new colors are born all the time). While playing Neon-Indian produced Gold Skull at the Black Cat lead-singer Charlie Brand came into the audience in a pointy-hooded red poncho and mimicked crushing the skulls of audience members who welcomed this mock-brutality with school-girl like enthusiasm. Even when Brand accidently poked one (un?)lucky crowd member in the eye, another responded by buying the band a round of shots. It suffices to say, their set was hypnotically exuberant enough to leave all who endured bodily harm still screaming for more. I had the chance to speak with the band before their set and learned that the sweaty guys from to catch a predator aren’t the only ones meeting people on the internet.

What do you do when an irate audience member screams “F#@%k Indie Rock!!!” in the middle of your show? If you’re Surfer Blood, you thank him kindly, finish a heartfelt and energetic set, and follow it up with a brilliant (albeit unsolicited) encore.

In a day and age when too many bands are content to let their cardigans and wayfarers do the talking, it sure is good to know that there are still some artists more concerned with putting on a show than trying to look nonchalant. When it comes to showmanship, openers The Drums didn’t really set a bar so much as they did a pinnacle. Frontman Jonathan Pierce’s performance was nothing short of revelatory. Possessing the androgyny of a Ziggy-era David Bowie, the strut of Mick Jagger in his prime, and the overall theatrical prowess of a virginal Madonna, Pierce was more than a frontman- he was a surrealist vision. Pierce and his band mates surged through tracks ‘Make You Mine’ and ‘Book Stories’ with such fervor it was difficult to blink.

Next Surfer Blood took the stage, accompanied by the palpable void left by Pierce’s wild gesticulating and marching. Opening with ‘Fast Jabroni’ it was clear that the theatrics of The Drums had even made an impression on Surfer Blood frontman John Paul Pitts, who had picked up some outlandish moves of his own. Though a very different scene from the kabuki theater of The Drums, the dedication of Surfer Blood’s performance brought a new depth to their Floridian College Indie Pop (which has been less than affectionately labeled the genre of alt-bro-pop), showing that band members had done more than discover the elusive formula of addictive buoyant distorted pop.

Though much has been said about their inexperience (they formed as Freshmen at University of Florida just last year), it is their dissimilarity which creates their distinctively multi-faceted performance. If they’re putting out material as critically acclaimed as Astro Coast while still pursuing cohesion, surely there is much more to come from these baby-faced virtuosos. The boys gave gave it their all, playing everything in their repertoire, in addition to a couple in-the-works tracks. As their aforementioned encore, they took ‘Slow Jabroni’ to its limits. Though it was self-consciously prefaced by Pitts’ comment that “this one’s really hard to play live”, their sincerity and focus made it the best song they played all night.

Rating: C

Even if you’re not a fan of The Black Keys, it’s likely their sound is a lot more familiar than you would think. Their music is prevalent in soundtracks for film, television, and even video games. It is in this area where their music really shines, their distinctive brand of lo-fi and affected blued rock lends a certain cool-factor to almost anything, even the paramount importance of american express to a certain ketchupy olympian.

Their sixth studio album, Brothers, has this swampy, thick, blues feel in spades. “Next Girl”, the album’s second track, has a great thumping sound evocative of Led Zeppelin, but the lyrics are so dry and woolly it is almost difficult to bear. “With my next girl/ She’ll be nothing like my ex-girl/ It was a painful dance/ And I got a second chance” The issue here is not that the lyrics are simple, as many great blues lyrics don’t exactly read like they could have been written by Leonard Cohen after a great books colloquium, it’s that they are painfully insipid. Many Blues greats had simple lyrics, but a great Blues song, as understated as its lyrics may be, conveys real feeling, like Bo Diddley’s Dearest Darling: “I once had a heart/So trill and true/ But now it’s gone/ From me to you/Take care of it/ Like I have done/ For you have two hearts/ And I have none.” Any feeling that may have inspired much of Brothers has been suffocated by banality.

Now maybe I’m missing the point, maybe the threadbare cliches that makeup the lyrics are intentionally lacking in order to allow the beats to shine, but if you’re inclined to thinking, this album may leave you fairly bored. Humming organ and gauzy, wistful vocals in “The Only One” provide a noted change from the harder bluesy rock The Black Keys are known for. But again the lyrics, like “I’m so wrapped up in your gaze/Hoping this is just a phaze” leave more than a little something to be desired. Other highlights include Jerry Butler cover “Never Give You Up” and “Too Afraid To Love You” (who doesn’t love a little harpsichord?). The high-point is definitely Dangermouse produced “Tighten Up” which is destined to become a summer driving/boating/anything anthem (like most summer anthems, Tighten up is not lacking in the whistling department).

I wouldn’t write off Brothers as a complete loss, The Black Keys are indisputably adept musicians and their smoky, gritty sound will make whatever you choose to do with your summer feel at least 10% cooler, as long as you’re not paying too much attention to the stale and unimaginative lyrics.

Harlem is a trio from Austin by way of Los Angeles by way of Nashville by way of Tucson. Their genre follows suit with their geography, Harlem is punk? garage rock? retro garage pop? R&B? proto-punk? etc etc. While their genre remains elusive, I think they explain their sound best: “When kids are jumping on the bed playing tennis rackets like guitars. We are the music that is playing in their brains.” Harlem’s newest release, Hippies swaggering, exuberant, unpretentious jaunt of an album. Hippies opens with the unavoidably catchy “Someday Soon” is a headbopping little number about “letting that shit burn”. Though Harlem certainly has a distinct sound, each of the 16 tracks bursts in its own unique way, alternating between heavy percussive surges and sweet and mellow throwbacks. There’s something disarming about the charm of Harlem’s insouciant take on whatever genre gets pinned on them. “Friendly Ghost” is yet another highlight, with winsome lyrics of, well, what the title suggests. Finally, I’d suggest checking out “Gay Human Bones” a welcome jolt of clear sound in a thickly distorted album. Overall, Hippies is the perfect thing to get you through the last searing days of classes and into the much needed lackadaisical days of summer.
