“The Lavishments of Light Looking” — WOKE

As part of their sixth annual single series, Adult Swim boasted an impressive list of participating artists. Among others, artists like Danny Brown & Clams Casino, Chromatics, Run the Jewels and Flying Lotus are slated to release a single each week, running from early-June to mid-October (you can find the full schedule on Adult Swim’s site here).

This week, Steven Ellison, better known as Flying Lotus, was set to release his single for the series. Instead, he debuted a new music collaboration project. Going by the name WOKE, Flying Lotus, Shabazz Palaces and Thundercat released their track “The Lavishments of Light Looking,” which features vocals from George Clinton, as part of the channel’s single series.

The track is a tightly packed ensemble of jazz, funk and varied vocals, perhaps giving us an idea of everything WOKE has to offer now that they’ve come together. Though it has received mixed reviews from fans, “The Lavishments of Light Looking” has grabbed the music scene’s attention and has us excited for what WOKE will put out next.
