Preview: Hippo Campus @ The Anthem, 1/31

Since 2016, Hippo Campus has embarked on a whirlwind of eight headline tours, embracing their “party on stage” mentality and singing the praises of their teenage bullshit. But with this year’s Flood Tour, things are different. The Minnesota-based high school friends (Jake Luppen, Zach Sutton, Nathan Stocker, and Whistler Allen) are turning 30. They’re older, wiser, and perhaps a bit more sober. They’re thinking more intimately about mortality and their creative processes; each step is intentional, laced with a genuine passion.

This new mindset purports to take center stage as Hippo Campus plays The Anthem on Friday, January 31. This will only mark the second stop on the tour before the quartet plays an amalgamation of the nation’s most prestigious venues. While still equally groovy and sharp, the band’s current sound is different from the indie tunes that garnered comparisons to UK artists Little Comets and King Krule. Instead, this tour is about no-bullshit rock music—what better genre to toe the line between introspection and unfiltered fun?

Hippo Campus will be joined in DC by prominent TikTok musician and personality Petey USA. Tickets are available for purchase at theanthemdc.com and at the venue doors.
