Lady Antebellum has been a country music staple since dropping their self-titled debut album back in 2008. Since the release of their latest album, 747, and the success of their “Wheels Up” tour, the group has never been hotter. This is why it came as a shock when, a few weeks ago, Lady A announced that the group would be taking a break. Late last night, September 30th, Lady Antebellum lead background vocalist Charles Kelley made it clear that he wasn’t taking a break from country music. Seemingly out of nowhere, Kelley released his first solo single, “The Driver”, and announced his first solo album, a project that is already attracting plenty of attention.
If Kelley’s “The Driver”, backed up by the vocals of country stars Dierks Bentley and Eric Paslay, is any indication, he’ll be just fine on his own. In “The Driver”, each artist takes a verse as “the driver, the dreamer, and the singer” respectively in what is a wonderful and soulful debut for the Lady Antebellum star. While Kelley says that Lady Antebellum will always be his focus, expect his solo career to take off in the coming months making the decision to return to his roots that much harder.
