This Wednesday, September 11, PJ Harvey is kicking off her North American Tour here in DC on The Anthem’s stage. Following her sold-out European I Inside The Old Year Dying tour in 2023, PJ Harvey will perform alongside her longtime bandmates John Parish, Jean-Marc Butty, Giovanni Ferrario, and James Johnston.
Polly Jean Harvey MBE is an iconic performer within the alternative rock community and most well known for her critically-acclaimed albums Rid of Me (2003) and Stories from the City (2000). She began her career in 1988 as lead vocalist, guitarist, and saxophonist for the band Automatic Dlamini. After separating from Automatic Dlamini in 1991, Harvey formed the PJ Harvey Trio after which she rocketed to worldwide fame. PJ Harvey’s music is highly distinctive and ranges across a variety of genres from punk blues to electronica to grunge. No matter the genre, she is known for her raw emotional intensity, complex artistic vision, and iconic “PJ Harvey voice” (you only need to listen to “Legs” off Rid of Me once to understand what I mean). Harvey’s gnashing lyrics and otherworldly sound truly changed the face of women in alternative music.
Her latest album I Inside the Old Year Dying was released July 7 of 2023 after a seven year hiatus and was produced with the help of her “musical soulmate” John Parish. It is a ragged, yet highly refined, folk album which expands on the epic poem Orlam Harvey published in the spring of 2022. The album is unlike anything else in her discography– dreamy, electronic, and bursting with non-traditional folk sound.
PJ Harvey is a must-see performer and tickets for her Anthem show are still available here!
