“Gold Shadow” – Asaf Avidan

While most people were watching the Superbowl last Sunday, a few hundred of us gathered in the 9:30 Club to see the first show of Israeli folk-rocker Asaf Avidan’s “Gold Shadow” Tour. Avidan’s voice is singular in music today, evoking a range of timbres from Amy Winehouse to Billie Holiday and Leonard Cohen. On the title song of his new album, Avidan simmers at Nina Simone levels of blues and heartbreak, over stunningly beautiful piano chords. Avidan is not an act to be missed.
