Put on your best new wave attire–your leather, your shoulderpads and what have you–and head over to the Anthem to catch the Psychedelic Furs as they continue their North American tour here in the district this Sunday, October 6.
The Psychedelic Furs first rose through the charts in 1981 with the tracks “Pretty in Pink” and “Dumb Waiters” off their album Talk Talk Talk. They gained and cemented their monumental status as new wavers with their 1982 hit “Love My Way”. The band utilizes a combination of driving, steady basslines, gothic yet romantic guitar riffs, and post-punk flavored vocals throughout their catalog to conjure images of teenage days, not without their angst, and a simpler youth (a big thanks to their song’s feature in John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink).
Off the heels of a near three decade hiatus, the Psychedelic Furs returned to the mainstream scene in 2020 with the album Made of Rain, a contemporary yet reflective foray into modern alternative styles, still backed by their ‘80s dark wave leanings. On the album, their latest, the group succeeds in a modern retelling of the ordinary lives and human struggles they reflected upon in pre-millenium releases. Their music is both sobering and compelling at once, novel yet grounded.
The Psychedelic Furs will be joined by fellow experimentalist post-punk band The Jesus and Mary Chain when they make their way to the Anthem this week. What better way is there to start off October than to indulge your post-punk sensibilities? Purchase tickets for the Psychedelic Furs and the Jesus and Mary Chain here.
