Having officially released their first album just one day before, Middle Brother could not rely on a dedicated fan base to pack the house at the 9:30 Club on Wednesday night. But, even though most people may not have known every word to every song, the buzz generated by the side-project of Delta Spirit’s Matt Vasquez, Deer Tick’ s John McCauley, and Dawes’s Taylor Goldsmith was plenty to draw a crowd in the middle of the week. McCauley and Goldsmith both pulled double duty opening with their own bands, but it didn’t take long for the band-name barriers to break down into a Last Waltz-esque indie folk free for all.

Video: Dawes at the Wave House

Before heading to the Rock & Roll Hotel for their concert with Vetiver and Peter Wolf Crier, L.A. indie rock quartet Dawes drove to 37th and O St, SE ready to play some guitar and sing some songs. When they looked around at the abandoned cul-de-sac in Anacostia and discovered that Georgetown University is located at 37th and O NW (a mistake every Georgetown student’s parents have undoubtedly made at least once), they hopped in their tour van and drove back across town. I stumbled upon Dawes, a four-piece band from Los, Angeles, at this year’s Newport Folk Festival, and I was instantly taken with their endearing folk rock. Hailing from the renowned Laurel Canyon region of California, they don’t shy away from their influences, infusing the warm harmonies of CSNY and the comforting melodies of The Band into their familiar sound.
