Indie rock artist Baek Hwong, also known by their stage name NoSo, embarks on their first headline tour, taking the stage at D.C.’s Pie Shop this coming Sunday, November 13. Their stage name stands for “North/South” – a response to the question: “Which Korea are you from?” which Hwong endured throughout their upbringing in suburban Chicago.
This past July, NoSo released their debut album, “Stay Proud of Me,” which features introspective lyrics paired with captivating instrumentals, drawing inspiration for their music from their Korean-American heritage and evolving gender identity. Hwong’s vast musical arsenal includes everything from synth-heavy pop songs such as “Suburbia,” to stripped-down guitar ballads like “I’m Embarrassed I Still Think of You.” Hwong emphasizes their unique journey of self-discovery and acceptance through their lyrics, and explores the many salient aspects of their identity, including gender, race, and sexuality. One song in particular, “David,” is a love song that uses female pronouns, showcasing their journey in the development of their sexuality. NoSo uses their platform to give listeners hope for unfettered expressions of identity and addresses the realness of life with vulnerability and candor.
