“Coin Laundry” – Lisa Mitchell

When I first arrived in Sydney for my semester-long adventure Down Under, I made a promise to myself that I would do my best to explore the music scene here.  This began for me when I stumbled upon Lisa Mitchell, who opened for Grouplove when I went to their show at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney.

Lisa Mitchell is an up and coming Australian singer/songwriter whose folk-pop sound is infectious and compelling. Originally from Melbourne, Mitchell first appeared on the Australian music scene by placing sixth on Australian Idol. Her first single from her debut studio album, entitled “Coin Laundry,” narrates her thoughts as she waits for the spin cycle in a laundromat in South Melbourne. She explains that at the time she was, of course, thinking about love, and if she’d find “the one” right there in the coin laundry. The line “do you have a dollar for me” in the song refers to Mitchell’s imaginative storyline in which she pretends to realize that she is a dollar short and asks her fantasy guy for spare change to get the conversation going. Its ethereal and charming sound showcases breathy vocals, unique percussion, and…wait for it…beatboxing. Mitchell’s musical creativity definitely makes her tracks worth a listen.
