On Friday, October 4, 2024, Dayglow (Sloan Struble) made his tenth stop on his extensive North America tour at DC’s The Anthem. Struble released his self-titled album Dayglow almost three weeks ago and performed many of his new songs at the concert.
Prior to the concert, I was a casual Dayglow fan, I had not followed his music releases and was only familiar with the hits. In high school, I liked listening to “Can I Call You Tonight?” and “Hot Rod” from his album Fuzzybrain, so I thought the concert might be fun. It was precisely that.
We watched Sun Room, a 1960s-inspired surf-rock band from Southern California, open the show. Their music was fun and we swayed along as the venue began to fill with Dayglow fans. Their performance left the crowd craving more of their music!
The atmosphere of the Anthem was fun, the crowd was lively, and it was fun to dance along to the music. Struble frequently connected with the audience, speaking to us multiple times during the concert. He also had great interactions with his band, creating a fun and friendly dynamic that made it feel like they were all close friends. You could tell everyone genuinely loved what they were doing, and their chemistry made the whole experience even more enjoyable and added a friendly and intimate dynamic to the performance.
In high school I loved the optimistic, feel-good music that captures an uplifting and nostalgic atmosphere, which is precisely what describes Dayglow and his music. I almost felt like I was enjoying the concert for my sixteen-year-old self.
Throughout the concert, Struble performed a mix of songs, mainly from his new album and a few from his past albums, Fuzzybrain, People in Motion, and Harmony House. The concert ended with “Can I Call You Tonight?” his most famous release yet. The attendees were the loudest and liveliest for this song; everyone was dancing and singing, and it felt like Strubble and the band were part of the crowd, not just performing the song for us.
