Over the past year, Future has had a historic rise in the music industry, riding a wave of popularity since the release of his hit album, Dirty Sprite 2. Although Future has certainly followed up DS2 with a lot of music, many of his new releases have contained the same repetitive sound as DS2. As one would expect, Future pretty much sticks to the same script with Evol. He mixes layered, lush trap beats and his garbled mumbling over nearly every track on the album. The druggy and melancholic feeling that pervaded his other albums still holds a strong presence. However, where the rap lyrics on his previous projects were sharp and witty, Future relies too much on his mumbling in Evol. The acerbic and biting rap lines that littered What a Time to Be Alive and Dirty Sprite 2 are few and far between. There is also only one feature on the album, when the The Weeknd is featured on the track “Low Life.” Not surprisingly, Low Life is the highest charting song off his album, as The Weeknd’s voice flows perfectly with the track.
Although many of the songs on Evol do follow the same pattern, there is still value to be found in it. Future’s voice flows really well on most tracks, especially on songs like “Maybach” and “In Her Mouth.” What makes most of his songs enjoyable to listen to, however, are the beats. Producers like Metro Boomin, Ben Billon$, and DJ Spinz create hazy and druggy beats that make the album an amazing auditory experience, regardless of Future’s voice. Evol may follow the same script as many other albums, but fans of Future should find no problem listening to the project’s fantastic beats and Future’s melodic, auto-tuned voice.
