Music Video: “Colors” – Halsey

This past year, Halsey has been making a name for herself. The 21-year old released her first album, Badlands, had the second highest debut for a female in 2015 on the Billboard 200, and has become somewhat of an icon for millennials. The third single off of Badlands, “Colors” was released in early February, and the music video was just released.

The music video stars Halsey alongside Teen Wolf heartthrob Tyler Posey. The 50s inspired video opens with the two playing tennis at a posh country club with their parents. It is shown that their parents are dating, and it is hinted that there is an attraction between Halsey and Posey’s character, both of whom attend Badlands Prep. Throughout, Halsey can be seen snapping Polaroid pictures of what is assumed to be Posey wherever they are, including of him in the locker room after their tennis match. Whenever he comes near, she makes sure to hide the photographs. The two are shown exchanging flirty looks and banter. It seems fairly obvious that Posey is the object of Halsey’s affection.

In the last minute of the video, as Halsey drops her Polaroids in the school hallway and Posey helps her pick them, it is uncovered that Posey is not the object of her attraction after all. His father is. The video then goes back to reveal that all of the Polaroids she had taken were of his father.

The video’s hazy atmosphere, 50s inspiration, and star-studded cast make it one of the best music videos of 2016. Halsey is proving that she is a forced to be reckoned with both her lyrics and her artistic direction.
