Elope with me, Miss Private, and we’ll sail to The Anthem because Belle and Sebastian are back around. Everybody’s favorite Scottish indie rock band will be playing The Anthem on Thursday, May 2nd as part of the North American leg of their most recent tour, making up for a number of canceled 2023 shows after Stuart Murdoch fell ill last year. The original tour found Belle and Sebastian performing on the heels of their January release Late Developers, a surprise companion piece to 2022’s A Bit of Previous.
Belle and Sebastian’s poetic lyricism and chamber pop sounds have been a mainstay in the alternative rock world since the release of Tigermilk on Electric Honey, the college label at their alma mater Stow College (now owned by the Glasgow School of the Art) in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1996, Belle and Sebastian signed with Jeepster Records and have since graced us with masterpieces including If You’re Feeling Sinister and The Boy with the Arab Strap. The band has defined itself as the bookish, “twee” character of modern rock music (Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer definitely listens to Belle and Sebastian), and you can’t miss the opportunity to catch these veterans of the global indie scene.
