If you’ve been keeping an eye on the blog in the past month, you’ve already heard a bit about rising sophomore Peter Fanone. He stopped by the WGTB studio in early May to talk a little bit about his newest single, “Friends For Now.” But he also took a break from studying on a sunny Saturday afternoon during finals to serenade us and the rest of the front lawn with two original songs. Take a listen after the jump, and keep an ear out for more from Peter in the fall.

I’ll be honest. We listen to a lot of music over here — a lot of great music, a lot of just plain okay music, and a lot of “hey I like this!” flash-in-the-pan music, and it’s not often that you come across a keeper, some music you can really sink your teeth into, listen to on repeat, and invest your interest in for an extended time. Well, the Wilderness of Manitoba is one of those bands. Not only are they friendly (and up for anything, from playing on a giant green chair to moving the whole show to my backyard after a memory card dilemma), but they make wonderful music, with both natural talent and ease with one another as well as what seemed to be a very well-rehearsed, on-point sound. WGTB Summer Film Fest: Tate Tucker, that Freshman LA Kid

Students in MUSC-270 spent the Spring semester holed up in the New South Film Screening Room taking on the music documentary as a genre. They watched as Beatlemania swept America and Bob Dylan and D.A. Pennebaker teamed up to paint a twisted picture of truth. They argued whether or not rock and roll was to blame for disaster at the Stones’ infamous Altamont Free Concert and collectively wondered what exactly happened in Shirley Clark’s Ornette: Made In America (I mean, really. What was going on?). But they also worked over the course of the semester to create their own short films, finding their own subjects and approaching them with a mixture of techniques and influences from the many documentaries they studied and their own unique vision. This week, Daniel Alexander (MSB ’11) shares his final project on Georgetown rapper and “Freshman LA Kid” Tate Tucker. Read More »

Early Spin: Labyrinth Ear

It takes something special to stand out in the ever-deepening sea of mashups, remixes, and revampings that seem to have taken over the airwaves and internet-streams. It isn’t enough anymore just to play a few songs simultaneously—reworking a track is an art that should subtly enhance the original, while also bringing something new to the table, resulting in a unique, superior hybrid. A couple weeks ago when I first heard Labyrinth Ear’s souped-up rendition of Arthur Russell’s “This Is How We Walk on the Moon,” I felt like they accomplished just that. Read More »
