Two rules were posted on the door outside the Rock N Roll Hotel last Saturday night. There were to be no stage dives and no crowd surfing. Unfortunately for the venue, both were broken, much to concertgoers’ delight. To blame were the members of the band headlining Saturday’s show: Wavves. Read More »

Song of the Day: “Hard Times” – Family Wagon

I’m not one for rock. Generally, the loud noises and chaos bring pain to my ears. Still, I have to say that I can’t get enough of this song. “Hard Times”, a track off Family Wagon’s 2012 EP Last Drag, is edgy and new, but also falls into a raw soulful groove that makes it the best kind of rock song. Album Review: Water Liars, Wyoming

Water Liars are a duo based in Water Valley, MS

Water Liars are a duo based in Water Valley, MSWater Liars are a band that likes to play it safe. Falling somewhere in the vicinity of country, folk, and blues, their brand of southern heartache is one we’ve heard before. All 11 tracks float along at a similar lethargic, breezy pace, and before you know it, the final track is coming to a close just about 40 minutes later. Alt-country was never exactly brimming with new ideas, and Water Liars don’t break the mould. This week, the US Department of Transportation ordered the Fung Wah Bus Transportation line to discontinue servies after a number of its buses failed a series of recent safety inspections. The bus line got you from between New York and Boston for the small price of $15. Like true punk rockers, the Fung Wa Bus Transportation company gave the Man the finger and hired a group of third party buses to continue ferrying passengers between Beantown and the Big Apple. Album Review: The Joy Formidable, Wolf’s Law

Wolf's_Law

Since the first time I heard “Whirring”, the biggest hit from The Joy Formidable’s first album, The Big Roar, I have been in love with the wall-of-sound feel that they manage to bring out in their alternative rock music. Their second album, Wolf’s Law, invokes that same sensation of awe and oversaturated eardrums that my first listen-to of “Whirring” treated me with. I love that effect. Read More »

Album Review: Leagues, You Belong Here

On first listen through  “Mind Games”, an irresistible rock-pop track coming off Leagues’ new album You Belong Here, it sounds like Thad Cockrell sings “Oh, what’s the fussin all about? You and me we were made for mind games.” Angsty and upbeat, this lyric draws listeners; it’s practically an indie romantic film in one sentence.

Song of the Day: “À Travers La Mer” – Law Abiding Criminals

Here we have a good example of what the effect of changes in tempo can do to a piece. While this recording of “À Travers La Mer,” the ‘debut single’ of Georgetown’s own Law Abiding Criminals, has a mid-slow tempo, usually indicative of a more reflective or melancholic song, the song was just recorded this way, slowed down from the live, for the practicality of the band learning how to record. With the above in mind, “À Travers La Mer” was written to be a more upbeat, romantic song- at least this is what LAC guitarist and fellow WGTB DJ Brady Fowler tells me – so this is our Valentine’s Song of the Day.
