On August 20th, The Gaslight Anthem is coming to play at our nation’s capital—Ironically, they are playing at The Anthem.
The band is originally from New Brunswick, New Jersey and is one of many great musical acts that got their start in the state. However, they uniquely have the honor of representing the state through their song “Howl.” Howl plays alongside chants of “you suck” every time the only Jersey sports team, the New Jersey Devils, score. It is an amazing experience. Their music ranges from a variety of genres but mainly falls into a nostalgic folksy rock category dominated by artists such as Bruce Springsteen. In fact, Springsteen is one of their inspirations and has recently joined them on of their recent songs, History Books. The band has its origins the 2000s folk rock scene. Their first album was released in 2007 and they continued to make music until 2015. Their breakup lead to a seven-year hiatus, with a one year reunion. In 2022, the band came back together and released a new full-length album, which will surely be heavily featured this Wednesday. This concert will be an amazing experience for music lovers of all kinds.
They are joined by famous pop punk/emo band Joyce Manor. If you enjoy bands like Modern Baseball and Title Fight, you’ll surely enjoy Joyce Manor. As emo evolved beyond its reflectively more radio-successful second wave at the turn of the 2010s, Joyce Manor combined its more upbeat tempos with the lyrical theming and hardcore influence of first wave bands like Sunny Day Real Estate. This fusion birthed songs like “Constant Headache” and “Catalina Fight Song,” which established the band’s longstanding success, which previously granted them a spot touring with scene juggernaut Weezer in 2023.
