★★★★
Australian band Pond’s fourth release may not differ extensively from its parent band Tame Impala, with which it shares two members, but whether or not they sound the same, good music is good music. Following in the psychedelic footsteps of Tame Impala, Beard, Wives, Denim gives listeners a second dose of much needed guitar heavy rock-pop. Read More »

Album Review: Princeton, Remembrance of Things to Come

cover

Yes, they are from Princeton; Princeton Street, in Santa Monica, California, that is.  The sound of this indie pop/rock quartet is just as clean-cut as their ivy-shrouded name might suggest, but with a bit less pretension and a lot more fun.  Remembrance of Things to Come, released in February on Hit City U.S.A./Easter Everywhere, is the second studio album from the band consisting of twin brothers Jesse (guitar, vocals) and Matt (bass, vocals) Kivel, their childhood friend Ben Usen (keyboard), and drummer David Kitz.  With rich layering and sophisticated lyrics, Princeton’s latest record is a promising step in a promising direction for a very promising young band. Single Review: High on Fire, “Fertile Green”

HighOnFire-FertileGreen

★★★★

“Raw, in your face, skull crushing metal” is how youtube user Xineohp37 describes the new High on Fire single “Fertile Green.” From the first thirty seconds of the song it is clear that the album De Vermis Mysteriis is going to be leagues better than High on Fire’s previous release Snakes for the Divine. The production is much better than Snakes, the vocals are not overly loud and the instruments are all clear and easy to hear. Created by ex-Sleep guitarist Matt Pike, High on Fire is another stoner/sludge metal venture, but leans more to the metal side of heavy metal. “Fertile Green” is all about pure heaviness and groove and is a sign that De Vermis Mysteriis will almost definitely kick Snakes for the Divine’s ass all up and down town. Album Review: Lucky Dragons, Existers

Put on your headphones; it’s time to listen to Lucky Dragons. Existers, the latest effort from duo Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara, can be heard any which way, but the album benefits immensely from the space and texture that a pair of headphones can afford. On headphones, you can almost feel the notes pinch you, as the album opens with an otherworldly pulsation of clicks, whirs and delicate synths that will have your mind glued to its seat. Forget structure. Forget lyrics. Simply appreciate the subtle, haphazard somethings that populate your ears. Read More »

Album Review: Brian Lopez, Ultra

Rock artist Brian Lopez confesses that his new album, Ultra, can’t be easily categorized into a single genre. Lopez’s Tucson upbringing plays an obvious role in his first full-length work, with its drawling melodies and instrumentation, but his sound is far from typical. While Ultra begins with a stereotypical rock song, the subtleties of his slower and layered, both musically and emotionally, pieces make the album worth a listen.
One of the most unique features of this album is its bilingualism. Lopez primarily sings in English and but several tracks feature Spanish, including “El Vagabundo” and “El Pajaro y El Ciervo.” Generally the use of Spanish added a depth to the music, but the overemphasis of traditional Hispanic elements such as mariachi in “El Vagabundo” seemed gimmicky and more appropriate for either an Antonio Banderas or old western film. Album Review: Imperial Teen, Feel the Sound

Posted by on March 30th 2012 0

ImperialTeen- Feel the Sound
★★★★
Imperial Teen is an indie pop group that’s been active since 1996.  Imperial Teen’s newest album, Feel the Sound, is a throwback to earlier times of alternative, indie-rock.  The fifteen-year old band delivers precisely what its fans expect and exactly what the album title reveals; a thumping, poppy sound. Just like their pretty obvious album title, they deliver just what was expected and just what they have always delivered, a steady beat from the 1990s.  Feel the Sound is evidence that Imperial Teen hasn’t swayed with the numerous changes in indie rock trends that have happened in it’s fifteen years of existence.
