Having never been to a concert in Germany before, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the venue or the atmosphere. My friends and I hopped on a train down to Reutlingen, which is a small city south of where I’m living, and found the Kulturzentrum, where Movits! performed. The hall reminded me a lot of the 9:30 Club, but with an epic bar and some weird tables on the dance floor. It wasn’t too crowded, but everyone was in a good mood and the atmosphere was nice. Movits! came out a little before 8:30 (there wasn’t an opening act) and set the mood right away. There were all sorts of flashing lights, jumping around, and Swedish rapping. The band interacted with the audience the whole time, explaining the meaning of the songs that they were singing and cracking jokes. The crowd enjoyed singer Johan Rensfeldt’s attempt to speak German and even more the fact that saxophonist Joakim Nilsson is a German teacher in Sweden but didn’t dare speak a single word of it to his audience. The lighting and stage effects were great and paired perfectly with the music.
The crowd particularly enjoyed some of their older songs, such as “Na Na Nah!” and “Sammy Davis, Jr,” but the band also played quite a few songs from their new album, They Tried to Bury Us, They Didn’t Know We Were Seeds.
The entire concert was amazing, but Joakim Nilsson on his saxophones was the highlight for me. The swing aspect of their hiphop style was really brought out by his playing, particularly when he switched to the baritone sax halfway through.
If you have the opportunity to see Movits! live, definitely go! It was a very entertaining show, and the band is definitely at their best in front of a live audience.
