Preview: flipturn Brings Dreamy Indie Rock to DC’s The Anthem on 4/12

Hailing from Fernandina Beach, Florida, indie rock band flipturn has spent the past decade evolving from high school jam sessions to festival main stages. Since their 2015 formation, founders Dillon Basse (vocals), Tristan Duncan (guitar), and Madeline Jarman (bass) have expanded their lineup with Mitch Fountain (synth) and Devon VonBalson (drums), both of whom they met at the University of Florida. Over the years, they have managed to craft a sound that’s both ethereal and deeply emotive.

After gaining traction with their 2018 EP Citrona, flipturn signed with Dualtone Records and dropped their debut album Shadowglow in 2022, leading to a massive U.S. tour with Richy Mitch and the Coal Miners. They’ve since taken their shimmering, cinematic sound to festival stages like Lollapalooza, Gov Ball, Bonnaroo, and SXSW.

In January of this year, flipturn released their sophomore album Burnout Days (2025), having previously teased fans with singles “Rodeo Clown”, “Juno”, and “Sunlight.” Beyond its floating, airy sound, “Rodeo Clown” plays with themes of escapism and performance: as Basse describes it, “The Rodeo Clown tries to escape a reality he doesn’t want to be in… all whilst putting on a show for those around him.”

Flipturn will bring their signature mix of dreamy indie rock and electrifying energy to The Anthem in Washington, DC, on April 12 at 8 PM. As the lost stop on the Northeast branch of their tour, this is a prime chance to catch a band continuing their rise to stardom. Don’t miss it!
