“Friends For Now” – Peter Fanone (COL ’15)

Back in April, Georgetown Student Peter Fanone (COL ’15) released his new single, “Friends For Now.” Peter has been writing songs since middle school and began recording while attending high school at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, MD. Last semester, he released an EP called Dreams, Fate and Everything In Between, but for his next release he’s looking forward to exploring the folkier sound he developed on “Friends For Now,” inspired by his love of bands like The Avett Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel. Single Review: Dirty Projectors, “Gun Has No Trigger”

In their first offering since 2010, Dirty Projectors do not disappoint. “Gun Has No Trigger” is an instrumentally sparse song, consisting of only vocals, drums and very subdued bass guitar. The track highlights the vocal prowess of David Longstreth along with the ethereal accompaniment provided by Angel Deradoorian, Haley Dekle and Amber Coffman. The interplay between the choir-like backing vocals and theLongstretch’s poetic heights is an exercise in deceptive depth.

Single Review: High on Fire, “Fertile Green”

“Raw, in your face, skull crushing metal” is how youtube user Xineohp37 describes the new High on Fire single “Fertile Green.” From the first thirty seconds of the song it is clear that the album De Vermis Mysteriis is going to be leagues better than High on Fire’s previous release Snakes for the Divine. The production is much better than Snakes, the vocals are not overly loud and the instruments are all clear and easy to hear. Created by ex-Sleep guitarist Matt Pike, High on Fire is another stoner/sludge metal venture, but leans more to the metal side of heavy metal. “Fertile Green” is all about pure heaviness and groove and is a sign that De Vermis Mysteriis will almost definitely kick Snakes for the Divine’s ass all up and down town.
