Best Coast and Wavves stopped by DC’s 9:30 Club last Tuesday on their Summer is Forever II Tour, a reboot of their 2011 joint tour of the same name. They were welcomed by a very enthusiastic, sold out crowd. Cherry Glazerr opened the night with a great set, and did well to establish the high energy that would last throughout the show.
Next up was Best Coast. Lead singer Bethany Cosentino gave a very ethereal performance, singing some new songs off of their 2015 album California Nights, before transitioning to their classics, like “Boyfriend” and “Our Deal.” During their set, Cosentino made two bold utterances: first, she said 9:30 Club is her favorite venue to play, and second, she endorsed Bernie Sanders (which Nathan Williams of Wavves would also go on to do later in the night). Both were met with loud cheering.
To close out the show was Wavves, who WGTB hosted last Spring for a concert in Bulldog Alley. On Tuesday, Wavves frontman Williams noted that his favorite part of their shows is the “diversity.” There were thirteen-year olds crowd surfing next to fifty year-olds, and a huge variety of different people all enjoying their music. Their set was heavy on their latest album, V, which the crowd received very well. Things got even more fun when they tossed balloons and blow-up aliens off of the stage. There was a healthy amount of moshing at the front, a departure from the more laid-back performances by Best Coast and Cherry Glazerr.
Overall, the Summer is Forever II Tour had a great lineup and was very well executed. It was great to hear a little bit of California in the District. Their tour ends on March 5th in Anaheim, CA.
