Starboy, The Weeknd

The Weeknd has done it again! The Weeknd’s new album, Starboy, was released on November 25th, and is already killing it on the charts. You’d have to have been cryogenically frozen or living under a rock to not know all about this genre-dominating musician, but if that’s unfortunately the case for you, let me enlighten you.

Abel Tesfaye, aka the Weeknd, is a Canadian singer, songwriter and record producer. He began his career by posting songs on YouTube, but since then, he has been featured on multiple artists’ works, such as Drake, Ariana Grande, Meek Mill and more.

The November release is his third studio album and features guest appearances from Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey, Future, and Kendrick Lamar. Starboy shows a new side of the Weeknd and also showcases his old standards, with plenty of female voice overs and sick beats.

I honestly love every single song on this album, because they each have a unique story to tell and a certain vibe about them. Here’s my analysis of some of the songs that really stick with me, particularly when I’m trying to do school work and end up humming the tunes to them.

“Reminder”: I live for any kind of tea being sipped, spilled, or thrown, and the Weeknd really outdid themselves with the disses on this track.

Favorite Lyric: “I just won a new award for a kids show / Talking ’bout a face-numbing off a bag a blow … “

“Secrets”: I literally sing and hum this song every day. It’s proof that a broken-hearted Weeknd = fire music, as he sings about a cheating lover.

Favorite Lyric: “Wipe the lust from your eyes / I see that you’re not mine … “

“True Colors”: A track that really hits the heart, “True Colors” is about wanting to know all about someone new, even if that involves learning some unsavory things.

Favorite Lyric: “Paint me a picture with your true colors / These are the questions of a new lover … “

“Stargirl Interlude”: I’ll listen to anything with Lana Del Ray’s name on it, and her vocals make this track what it is. Although it’s only an interlude, I wish that it was a lot longer.

Favorite Lyric: “My back arched like a cat, my position couldn’t stop you were hitting it … “

“Six Feet Under”: Future is amazing. The Weeknd is amazing. Putting them together? This track is lit.

Favorite Lyric: “She don’t need nobody waiting back home, she got it … “

“A Lonely Night”: Getting some major MJ vibes on this song. I can almost see myself moonwalking, yelling “cha’mone” and hip thrusting whenever I listen to it. (Secret: I actually do all of this). He is clearly denying his connection to a one-time lover, who wants more. Protip: when he says, “We’re no good for each other,” take his advice. If he don’t claim you, he ain’t the one.

Favorite Lyric: “Baby girl I loved you on a lonely night, oh / It was the only time and if I led you on then I apologize … “

“Attention”: This song makes me want to twerk while crying. All some of us need sometimes is a little attention. The Weeknd sings about a girl who only notices when he’s gone because she only wants attention. I feel like we’ve all been both parties of this story, at some point.

Favorite Lyric: “Only see me on the TV or the bed now … “

This album has been my jam for the past week, and with every listen, it just gets better and better. I absolutely love the sound that the Weeknd puts out with this album and how he channels many different aspects of his personality and talents to create a transitional album.

If you haven’t listened to this album yet, you need to do so RIGHT NOW. The Weeknd kills it on this album, per usual, but this time he captures different aspects of himself than in previous releases. I hope we’ll get to enjoy a lot of music videos for this album – “Starboy” was already a great music video to watch and I just wish for more from the Weeknd.
