Album Review: Iron & Wine, Ghost On Ghost

Sam Beam, the master behind Iron & Wine, has finally dropped his fifth LP. This new album only continues to prove that he is no longer the man that began with just an acoustic guitar and a whisper of a voice. Ghost On Ghost is complex, layered, and unlike any work he has released as of yet. While his last album, Kiss Each Other Clean, had a similar production feel, Beam has yet again ventured into new territory with a level of joy (one track name) that he usually avoids. Seasonally appropriate, too, as we creep into summertime and search for this lighter, pop version of a still beautiful Iron & Wine. Read More »

This seven-piece hails from Baraboo, Wisconsin and describes the album as “less helium-fueled third grade birthday party, and more county highway roadkill buffet.” Whatever that means, it works. Nomad is a rock record with meditative, soothing electric vocals woven with contrasting, wavering guitar chords. Nomad is also Bombino’s second record and sung entirely in his native language of Tamashek. It is at once familiar and alien: the guitar is reminiscent of the Black Keys (for a good reason, please read on dear friends) yet the vocals evoke a language, a culture, and land drastically different from our own.
