Weezer has basically always been awesome. From their 90s releases of The Blue Album and the now-legendary Pinkerton, to the recent Everything Will Be Alright In The End, Rivers Cuomo and company have been delivering consistently strong jams for the past two decades. Although they’ve had a few weak moments (think: the pop confusion that is Raditude), their most recent single, “Thank God For Girls”, marks a strong, yet innovative, direction for the band. The rapped-out chorus and Beck-like lyrics, when paired with an energetic beat and awesome cover art, is a different sound from Cuomo’s past work, but it’s incredibly catchy and a welcome change of pace. If you’re not convinced by lyrics discussing the unrealistic idolization of women or the image of Adam stealing osprey eggs to get back at God, just watch the video. Actually, you should watch the video regardless of your take on the song – it’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen.
That quantity of cannolis is reason enough for this song to succeed. It may not be the chart-topping single Cuomo believes it to be, it may be adolescent in the Weezer tradition, but nevertheless, it’s an undeniably fun track that I can’t stop listening to.
